Karma Ryan

Yes. Laws, policies, all politics is important to how our society runs right now. It keeps most chaos at bay and provides punishments for those how cause harm. It protects people, environments, exports and products, etc. Some laws and policies do more harm than good however, so just because it is important to how our society works doesn’t mean they are all the best. For example some laws prioritize money, like oil over the environment.

Laws and politics in the past have had long-lasting, enduring effects. Because of the Bill of Rights and First Amendment specifically, people are able to speak their mind and comment freely on topics without having to tear the government, as other countries outside of the U.S. do. This right allows many discussions and criticisms of governments to be brought up and allows people to confront corruption as well. For example, if a government official is involved in a scandal, social media will spread that news very quickly and people will be able to add on to the issue, possibly exposing further involvement.

I strongly believe laws and policies has significantly shaped our society, playing a role in our society. If we look back at the Indian Removal Act, we can recall the numerous, unjustifiable deaths, and removal of Native Americans. These Natives were stripped from their identity and if it weren’t for this removal, their influence may have spread widely across America. Furthermore, many Civil Rights Acts during the Civil Rights Era, caused people to find ways to become more outspoken and protest over political problems like the Vietnam War, tariffs, etc. This made protesting and arguing with law federations become more common, shaping a sensitive and controversial society.

Although there are some laws and policies that some might deem unnecessary, there are others---ones that provide protection to immigrants or alien countrys---that are vital to uphold peace in our current generation. Essentially laws and policies are here to manifest peace, order, and cooperation, by placing much needed boundarys on the actions of our society.

-Caleb Tabadero

Alex N.

During JFK's era, there were high tensions between the US and foreign nations, specifically communist Russia. However, rather than emphasizing superiority and trying to "best" the communists, JFK took a cooperative approach. He hoped to advance humanity peacefully, using their strength to unite against similar issues rather than finding issues to fight over. Today, this has translated into a society rather reluctant to go to war. Our first option is always to seek negotiations, to look for peace. Thanks to this, our day to day lives are much safer and more peaceful than they might have been if previous presidents had consistently alienated foreign nations through attempting to conquer them—through ideals, strength, or resources.

Laws and politics shape almost every aspect of our lives. The good laws protect our rights and improve society for its constituents. The bad laws push people to mobilize for change and may restrict individual autonomy. For example, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed segregation and discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. This transformed public spaces such as schools and workplaces. The impact of policy change goes beyond our day to day life, it also lays the framework for future legislation and inclusive protections.

Yes, both laws and policies today shape our society by bringing stability, justice, and order to our communities. For example, the laws on minimum wages help society by providing the working-class with fair pay, allowing them to afford the basic standard of living. Compared to decades ago where laws on minimum wage never existed, it made living a lot worse for people who worked hard and couldn’t afford to pay for their necessities.

Yes, laws and policies play a huge role in society today because they shape everything from individual rights to global peace. For instance, JFK believed the government had a moral duty to protect freedom, fight poverty, and avoid nuclear war through unity and diplomacy. His campaign pushed for laws and policies that fought for the citizens as he truly believed that the country serves the citizen and depends on the citizens. His vision contrasts sharply with leaders like Donald Trump, who pushed more isolationist and aggressive policies, especially around nuclear threats and international agreements. - Quoc D

Yes, laws and policies affect several facets of our society today. A prominent example of this can be seen in Trump’s new economic policy—which involves tariffs on imported goods. This policy has increased the price of international, imported goods by staggering amounts. For instance the price of fish sauce from Vietnam has increased by 46% due to this policy. However, this increase in price is not limited to exotic, foreign goods, a large portion of American groceries (fruits, nuts, cheeses, etc.) are imported from other countries; the rising prices of groceries will negatively impact the quality of life for the average middle-class American, even more so for those economically disadvantaged. This effect is not limited to the individual American. It can also be observed in large corporations—for instance, the day that the tariffs took effect, the S&P 500 (an index fund that tracks the stock performance of the top 500 companies in America) dropped by a staggering 5% This shows how just one economic policy can affect multiple aspects of our society at different levels.

-Victor V.
