Personal Selling is when a salesperson communicates with a potential customer in order to inform, persuade, and remind them to make a purchase of their product face-to-face. It's great for understanding customer needs and getting personal feedback from customers, but is more expensive than other types of promotion.

Examples of personal selling include car salesmen at a dealership or in department stores at the jewelry and watch counters. Used mostly in companies selling high ticket items.

Coupons attract attention for the promotion of a product. They offer discounts or deals on specific products.
There are 6 types of coupons:
Internet: Coupons that are distributed through the internet. (ex.) Emailed coupons and coupon web sites.
Cross-Product: coupons that are distributed with one product for another product. (ex.) A free oil change when buying a new car.
Printout: Old fashioned coupons that are printed out and turned in for the deal. (ex.) coupons found on purchase receipts.
Free Standing Inserts (FSI): Coupons that put in a product before it is handed out or sold to a lot of people. (ex.) coupons found inside your newspaper or grocery bag
Shelf Display: Coupons that are put on the shelf next to its product. Customers then think that they are getting a good deal on a product. (ex.) A card dispenser in the grocery store that reads, "buy one bunch of bananas get one free."
Web based: coupons mean only fro online purposes and shopping. They cannot be printed. (ex.) A coupon code that is applied to an online shopping cart.
The video below discusses a promotional decision made by Bed Bath and Beyond about their coupons.

Demos, or demonstrations, are where a product is shown in front of potential customers to introduce it and show what it is. Sampling is when customers are given some of the product for free so they can try it out before making a purchase. Studies show that customers purchase items they normally wouldn't have purchased when given a sample.

Examples of demos and sampling are test drives at car dealerships and free samples of food products at Costco and Sam's Club. Demos and sampling are most commonly found in grocery stores.

Everyone likes free stuff. Companies attract potential customers by offering free products. The cost of the free products is paid for by the increase publicity for the company. (ex.) Cotopaxi offered free bags to the first 200 people who waited in a line outside their store. This may seem like it is expensive to give out so many free bags, but it becomes worth it because of the extra advertising and publicity.
The video shows some of the free food products that McDonald's is using to promote their food. This has helped to get a bigger customer base.
