Welcome to our first ever virtual Open House! It has certainly been a remarkable year, and we are grateful for the support of our school community in navigating this unique experience.

This evening you will have the opportunity to view information from our teachers regarding our students' learning experience throughout the year. In addition, you can watch some amazing virtual performances by our Musical Theater & Drama Club, as well as the SMMS Animation Festival created by our Visual Arts students.

Tonight is also a celebration of our school community's strength and resiliency in facing one of our greatest challenges. The work that you see is reflective of everyone's efforts throughout the year, and It is truly my honor and privilege to serve as your Principal!

This year Sierra Madre Middle School is creating a special yearbook to reflect the unique year that our school community has experienced.

Our yearbooks will be hard cover and cost $35
For an additional penny, each student will have the opportunity to purchase an Ad in which to create their very own personalized dedication.
You may also join with your friends in creating a group dedication as well. (Only one submission per student or group)
Students can purchase their Ad at the same time that they purchase a yearbook, and you don’t need to purchase a yearbook in order to purchase a space.

The deadline to submit your Ad is May 17th.

As part of our promotion ceremony, we are also creating a diploma presentation and we need each 8th grader to submit an individual photo to newsom.garrett@pusd.us. It is important that we have everyone's picture included so please submit your diploma photo by Friday, May 14 as well.

Drive Thru Celebration: Wednesday, June 2
We will host a drive thru celebration in our parking lot, during which our 8th graders will receive their diplomas, certificates and awards. More information to come.

WHERE DID THE TIME GO?!?!

Can you believe it?!?! May is practically done. While we have a few weeks left, many of us, students, teachers, and parents included, have asked, where did the year go?

It does just seem like August was not that long ago. Our students have learned how to get organized, navigate Canvas, and uploading work in more ways than one. While this has definitely been a year to remember.

THANK YOU!!!

I am beyond grateful for my students and families. As always we continue to learn and grow together. This has not been an easy task by any means. Students have become more tech savvy this year and resilient as they have learned to navigate the best they could through remote and hybrid learning. And for this, I am grateful and say thank you!

Hello Everyone! This year has truly been a historic year for the remarkable group of students in my class. The kiddos in room F-109 have shown patience, resiliency, adaptation and collaboration! Connection issues, feedback/background noise, webex outages, and little siblings have not slowed them down in the slightest! They have continued to demonstrate hard work and dedication to learning. A Salute to Spectacular Seventh Graders!

The 2020-21 school year has tested students, teachers, and families in ways we could not imagine. Computer glitches (the yellow triangle of doom!), WebEx crashes, assignments that did not open, or would not submit were all part of a day's work. Throughout it all, the seventh grader persevered and maintained a commitment to excellence. Your discipline and dedication to your education will. serve you well in the years to come.

It's hard to believe that my last last Open House as I retire is a padlet but in art it's definetly been the year of the padlet! So tonight it's the mother of all padlets! Enjoy! I continue to be blown away by the amazing creativity and accomplishments of these middle schoolers in a Covid year! The layers of artistry, creative thinking matched with incredible execution! They say it's not what you go through, but how you come out of it. I can't believe it's been 30 years of teaching! But as I turn a new chapter, I am looking forward to returning to volunteer next year and check in on these amazing artists as they continue to grow! This year has been challenging for sure but in many ways has opened many new doors allowing us to explore music in many different ways.
First off, we have been continuing to perform and learn our instruments at home, culminating in solo performance videos and group video collages. We were also able to continue learning instrumental performance using an app called, Sight Reading First.
Sight Reading First allowed students to continue note reading on their instrument at their given level of experience. Students were able to challenge themselves by performing a variety of note reading exercises in order to progress to the next level.
We have also explored online music creation using Chrome Music Lab as well as learned to use the Digital Audio Workstation or DAW known as Soundtrap. The students were able to create their own personal style of modern music using loops of beats, melodies and different sound effects, importing tracks, and even creating their own sounds from everyday items found in the house, "found sound". We even created a piece of music using the actual sounds recorded on Mars from the Mars Rover, "Perseverance". We also explored adding spoken rhyme or rap into our music.
Students also composed scales and melodies using the application , "Noteflight". This gave them a hands on understanding of how notes work in sheet music; measures, note values and time signatures.
Then, we were able to explore music history using the music program called, "Quaver". This is a fun approach to learning music history, theory and general music making and understanding.
Finally, we were able to explore the internet and find real life performances and examples to put all of this information together in a real way.
One of my personally favorite projects was having the students write a music report on their favorite band or musician followed by an oral presentation. This opened my world on the different kinds of popular and not so popular music that the kids are listening to these days. It also gave me a better sense or insight of who the student is, as many of them never show their cameras in class.
I am grateful to have had this opportunity to explore music in such a different way and it will forever change how I teach music from now on, for the better!

HISTORY
The History-Social Science Content Standards for grade 8 are designed to measure a student's knowledge of American history between the founding of our nation and World War I. The content of our textbook, Discovering Our Past: The American Journey to World War I matches these standards. We just finished The Age of Jackson.

Although having absolutely no prior knowledge of Chinese, they dove deep into the extensive history of China and experienced firsthand the beauty of Chinese poetry. Students have logged hours of physical activity this year through the use of a weekly activity log!
Free Choice Activity
On Mondays and days students didn't have PE class they were expected to participate in a "Free Choice Activity". This could be anything from going on a walk, riding a bike or jumping on a trampoline.
Workouts
On the two days a week students had PE class they were asked to perform a workout. Sometimes the workouts were assigned and other times they could choose. Some of the resources we used this year are YouTube, Darebee.com and student created workouts.

This year's academic work can best be described as a tale of two semesters.
Fall Semester
During the fall semester we focused on fitness, health, nutrition and well being. We created workouts, learned about calories, labeled the skeletal muscles of the body and even learned about the importance of sleep, good posture and motivation.
Spring Semester
The spring semester was dedicated to learning about a variety of sports. Students were exposed to a wide variety of sports beyond what would be possible to play in school even in normal times. We learned basic rules, strategies and terminology for sports such as softball, rugby, water polo, tennis, basketball, soccer, football, golf and more!

The opening words of the United States Constitution are the perfect words to consider as we reflect on the 2020-21 school year. Yes, it was challenging, but we faced those challenges together and emerged stronger.
I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude for the effort and commitment of my students and families. I have no doubt that you will take the lessons learned this year and use them to excel in high. school and beyond!

Thank you parents for logging into our virtual open house and for your continued support all year long. Going all the way back to August we covered the following topics:

The history of Physical Education
Fitness Concepts
- Muscular strength & Endurance
- Cardiovascular endurance
- Flexibility
- The FITT principle
Yoga basics
- Balance, flexibility, and focus
Juggling
- 2 and 3 prop cascade

We also covered in detail the following sports:

The greatest challenge this year was getting students active in their own remote learning environments. For physical activity we completed the following tasks:

YouTube “This or That” workouts and sport related videos
Yoga
Juggling

It has been a tremendous year and we covered more knowledge-based information than we have in any other of the years past. With that said they students were still able to build relationships with both myself and their peers. Thank you again for all the support.
