Reading in the foreign language is always the hardest task of them all. It is, together with Writing, the activity in which I think we still have a long way to walk to make it interesting and funny for our students.
I think the main idea we should focus on is motivation. It is impossible to read, a text or a novel, if the student's interest is not considered at all. Of course students should read about a high range of topics, but always having a look at students' interests, hobbies...
On the other hand, it would be a good idea to read without even noticing that you are reading. I mean, children don't know exactly what they are reading at the beginning, they only read. I ask my students to pay attention at the English words which surround them, and that works, and that is reading as well. In class, I ask them to read short texts with different intonatiotions (sadness, happiness) and when they don't pay attentios at the text itself their pronunciations improve a lot.
I think the most important thing is to break the old conceptions associated to reading, especially in the foreing language.

I am still getting used to using webpages in class.Up to now I haven´t had much opportunity to use these resources that I find really helpful and motivating for students and for myself, as I also get tired of textbooks and these webpages provide new and fresh material.I must thank you all for all the information you have provided. I have been trying some of your suggestions during this week and I´m simply amazed at the enormous quantity of activities, videos, readings, songs...available on the web.
These are some of the webpages I use:
with videos at different levels and many well-known songs for students to enjoy as they sing along.
-bbc 6 minute english
we really like this one.The last one we viewed was "hello, hello" about where the first word we learn comes from. You learn new vocabulay and you can also see the transcript as you listen. The range of topics is really varied and appealing to them, from if schoolchildren shoud work to what we buy when we are sad. After watching a video there´s always a little discussion.
-agendaweb.org
I have discoverd this page recently and I´m really keen on it, as it provides a bit of everything :verbs, videos, listenings, readings, ...hundreds of exercises at different levels easy to correct .
I also use YouTube and an online dictionary I can´t live without( the free dictionary by farlex)
These are my webpages so far...but after reading your posts I know a whole new world of online resources has been opened to me .
Sure my students will appreciate it!
