In 1930, Mr Aw Boon Haw, the Honorary Chairman of the Board of Directors proposed that the school procure her own land to facilitate further development. He generously donated $5000 to initiate the fund-raising activity. In November that year, the school purchased a plot of six-acre land at King’s Road. The school hall and eight classrooms were added in 1933. The library was completed in September 1934. In 1939, the Science Block and classrooms for senior middle classes were completed.

Extracted from: Heritage Gallery Room in Nanyang Girl's High School

Rickshaws offered an affordable and convenient means of getting around.14 Popular among the rich and poor alike, rickshaws were ideal for short journeys through crowded inner-city streets and alleys. Besides from passengers, rickshaws also carried goods, manure and even cadavers. Commuters used it to get to work, ferry children to school or attend social gatherings.Rickshaws could last for at least five years with regular maintenance. However, the purchase cost was high, amounting to at least a year’s salary of a rickshaw puller in 1917.
http://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/infopedia/articles/SIP_947_2005-01-25.html
