According to Gerald Graff, "We associate the educated life, the life of the mind, too narrowly and exclusively with subjects and texts that we consider inherently weighty and academic"(61). We often greatly value school knowledge and ignore the basic skills which have a significant contribution towards our daily life.

Zitong,
Zoe,
Daisy

I agree with Gerald Graff that " 'Making students' nonacademic interests an object of academic study is useful for getting students and overcoming their boredom and alienation". Reading is not only what you enjoy but something that we can associate with social life. Being able to carry on a conversation with people in most cases will get you farther than just being academically smart.

When Malala face threat of terrorists, she still tried to solve the problem in a peaceful way, she claims, "It would be better to plead, 'OK, shoot me, but first listen to me. What you are doing is wrong. I'm not against you personally, I just want every girl to go to school"(Yousafzai 3). Malala's spirit of peace and devotion to peace has inspired me to contribute to a more peaceful world. Malala love school because she enjoy studying with classmates.

According to Mike Rose, " To acknowledge a broader range of intellectual capacity is to take seriously the concept of cognitive variability, to appreciate in all the Rosies and Joes the thought that drives their accomplishments and defines who they are. This is a model of the mind that is worthy of a democratic society". This idea applies to the situation of the current society because people will just look at the blue-collar worker and negatively evaluate their intelligence. However, to really define who they are and how much of the mind they use, is to contemplate the way they succeed in their work and appreciate it. We might define ourselves as an intellectual mind based on who we are and how well we do in school but do not forget the fact that everyone is good at different things and has a variety of intellectual minds.

For example, waiters get the working skills while they worked in the restaurant .

To acknowledge a broader range of intellectual capacity is to take seriously the concept of cognitive variability, to appreciate in all the Rosies and Joes the thought that drives their accomplishments and defines who they are." The author explained using his mum and uncle stories that we should not judge a book by its cover. We should respect and appreciate to every occupations, as every jobs required a lot of skills to master.
