Module 1 - 1.2 STEM careers in the job market

1) Do you think there is a lack of STEM skills in Europe? Despite increasing numbers of unemployed people in Europe, employers find it difficult to find highly qualified STEM workers. 2) If so, which is the main reason for that. The main reasons for that are: demographic crisis of europe; the restructuring of some sectors; the increased demand for high-level STEM qualifications and the low number of STEM-qualified workers.

In many schools the concern is in the certification of learning. There is a great deal of concern about the results of national examinations. The teacher is conditioned in his practice. I think this is one of the main difficulties for working STEM education in Portugal

The fusion of biological, physical and digital systems will change the way we will live. The negative effects will be the loss of many jobs, for example, and will have dramatic effects for countries that will not follow this revolution. I think the future will bring us scenarios that we can not imagine now. Smarthphones will become part of our body, for example.

Module 2 2.2 Evolution of STEM professions

The organizations of the future will be more and more open, with the people most connected to each other and to the organization. With technology, it will be easier to create spaces for innovation and collaboration. People will learn differently (not just in business, in schools as well). Increasingly, they will import the results to the detriment of the fulfillment of a schedule or presence in the workplace. The monitoring of social networks, analysis of sociograms and spaces of influence will increasingly become a reality in people management. Personal branding and employer branding will be active to consider and work on. The volume of data and information will convert Big Data with an unstoppable trend.

In the near future all STEM professions will have great expansion. Data Scientist will be one of the professions with great demand. Artificial intelligence, robotics, programming are areas for which we must prepare our students.

3.1 STEM skills 1) In your opinion, which is the best definition of STEM skills and why?

STEM skills correspond to the capabilities expected by a licensee in the STEM disciplines or by a STEM professional. However, these skills can be obtained through professional courses or may be present in people without a STEM profession.

2) Provide at least one example of non-STEM professions that use STEM skills. “A non-STEM occupation who might still be using their STEM skills at work. For example, marketing employees in a chemical company might be graduates in chemical degrees”.

3.2 STEM skills of the future. In focus: ICT and digital skills.

I just have a computer and a projector in the classroom. Students do not have computers to use in class.

3.4 Classroom methodologies to promote STEM skills

Pedagogical approaches to promote STEM or soft skills.
1. Engineering design: Engineering design is a methodology to promote the inclusion of engineering practices into the existing STEM curriculum.
2. Scientific inquiry/Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE):Scientific inquiry prepares students to think and act like real scientists, ask questions, hypothesize, and conduct investigations using standard science practices.
3. Project based learning (PBL): Project based learning approach can be defined as “the ongoing act of learning about different subjects simultaneously”.
Summary of tools mentioned in the video “Development of hard and soft STEM skills for your students” and that (combined with the approaches above) can help boost skills in the classroom.

Some of the activities developed at my school: The universities make presentations of their courses and the students are invited to participate in practical activities in the universities. Science days are also activities developed every year. Some STEM teachers make lectures for students at school.
