Challenges and Opportunities by Teacher Academy

In the second video, Prof.Dr. Hans Anand Pant of the Deutsche Schulakademie makes the point that the integration of refugees in our school actually provides a good opportunity to rethink schools in general and that the work required to integrate them can be a powerful driver for innovation at schools. Do you agree with this statement? Why (not)?

I totally agree. In fact, we have learned a lot from the difference. The difference by itself and the way we stand before this difference. As already mentioned, these children and young people come with a lot of desire to learn and full of dreams, this creates a dynamic of entrepreneurship in our students. We must be very careful and prepared to integrate these new students, we must not forget that they will be and will be part of the future of each country. And they will question us about what we have done for them. Apart from that we have the opportunity to defend and apply the humanist values that founded the European project. Diversity and tolerance are incalculable values for Europe.

I loved watching the videos, and I think that involving experts from inside and outside helps a lot in the integration of newly arrived migrants. The idea of welcome culture spaces , or welcome classrooms is really cool. Of course, this requires a completly different kind of school management and as they say in the video, the whole school has to be rethought.
I totally agree with Andreea, from Sweden: that sort of innovation takes too much time.
Considering the school where I work, that is in southern Sicily, I wonder if such an investment of sources, -human and economic- is worthwhile. Actually newly arrived migrants from Africa are not willing to settle down here; their journey has not ended here, since they are headed to Germay, or France, or elswhere in nothern middle Europe. They are not interested in integrating in Sicily, so they come to school with very low motivation. Getting them involved in any sort of activity is a really tough job. We have groups of teachers working with these students to help them with the language, but most of them are far from being interested.

I often feel alone in similar situations and I agree with Prof.Dr. Pant this difficult challenge is a richness opportunity for rethinking our schools. The idea of welcome classroom is not hard to realize. In the past when I offered newly arrived students to talk about their cultural situation and experiences, they became more motivate to learn our language to integrate and the other students more available. So, I think a cultural space could be a great opportunity to better relationships.

I, of course (and I think I can say the same for all the teachers attending this course...) totally agree in seing difference as an opportunity, but following the points of the introduction, I can't deny that there are some serious issues that can't be overlooked (I'm talking about my own situation, I'm fairly sure that other colleagues are on a safer ground):

1. I feel not only alone, but, almost always, unsure: younger generations of teachers, in Italy, are receiving a good preparation but, as far as I am concerned, I wasn't trained to do my job and to face tons of different issues every days. You are expected to improvise as a psychologist, a mom, a painter, a musician, a singer, a sport trainer, a writer of ambitious request to obtain funds, an expert in computer, languages, cinema, government plans, apart from the contents of the subjects you teach and the most efficient ways to do it... Caring for my pupils, I try to attend specific courses, but, very often, they are not up to my expectations, are a waste of time, energy and money and are, simply, too many to substitute a good university training before the job (maybe, I'm only getting older...). So, I'm always trying and feeling guilty for what I don't do and for things that I fail.

2. It's not so easy to work and communicate with other teachers: sometimes, we just don't share a vision and a mission of the school (for instance, is it a right for children to have a time to play -I find it a wonderful mean of socialisation- or can be dangerous, because they can get hurt and parents can denounce you; school excursions can be opportunities or a apin the teacher's neck?), so, all the objectives can't simply be reached together and cost you a lot to try to get nearer them by yourself... Some teachers, maybe, are just too tired and let down to try again...

3. Community doesn't always support a welcoming school: in my village there is a catholic school, and a lot of parents simply send their children there so they can study without the burden of "different" students... How will they manage in the real life is another story... (for instance, when a tv came to my village nobody from my school was invited, and the principal of the catholic school talked about a project intended to integrated, thanks to sport, all the children: it's a pity that almost all disabled or "foreign" pupils attend OUR school, not theirs...), and migrants live by themselves in the historical center of the town. It's very hard to build a group when parents teach their children not to share anything with some of their schoolmates...

4. Sometimes, even the school itself doesn't support changes: we worked together to make preliminary non-verbal tests to assess the ability of new arrived students, but they are (maybe...) spending their third year in a drawer... So, sometimes I understand why when you call a meeting to plan something new, you always see the same, few, faces...
5. As far as experts and organizations are concerned, I used to attend lectures, meetings, laboratories and courses with a wonderful association, but, due to shortage of funds and a policy not so openminded, they have to stop their long journey last year...

Not that our school is bad, but because the ratio between natives and migrants is approximately 1 : 4. And Christians to non-Christian is approximately 1:2. The parents of German children and 2-3 generation migrants do not want their children associating with these children.
I am also older and feel that I have not be sufficiently trained to deal with these difficulties. I teach Physics and not languages. This new challenge is forcing me to rethink my classes, because the principles can not be communicated without language. We are now working with pictographs and comics. This requires much time and effort on my part, because I can't find anything to buy to save me time. In Italy schools had to face in the 70's the big challenge of integrating SEN pupils, when the innivative law forced the education system to close special schools and to integrate any child in regular schools. Now we are facing this new challenge. I think that is a key moment for schools and for Europe to decide our future, If we, as Europeans, can afford the challenge of a new point of view on migrants and inclusion we can win; another choice, closing borders and our classrooms, will sign the end of a common dream of Union

How not to agree with Hans Anand Pant? "Participating organizations" are the only ones that have a chance of success when there are several actors with different roles and goals and so on in the school. It is a practice that for example in the residential architecture world (I have an architect's background) has had its results, Giancarlo De Carlo docet. I therefore believe that the school should also be confronted with the representatives / mediators of the various affluent cultures in order to plan effective strategies. I also share the opinion of Melanie Weber when she states that "there is no ready-made plan suitable for all Students "and therefore also in multilingual inclusion there is a need for individualized strategic plans. But is the school (at least Italian) always ready to open the debate? Are always leadership, teachers so open to welcoming external realities that support their work? Whether for economic reasons or for fear of ‘invasion of the field’, this often does not happen. Perhaps there is a need to change mentality and form internal actors first and then open a dialogue.

Dr. Hans Anand Pant makes a very important statement. Integration of refugees in our school and especially in greek school is a good reason for our educational system to be updated. As our schools are obsolete enough (not only the educational methods but also the buildings, too), the work required to integrate refugees would be the best way to introduce innovative education methods to our students. For many years my country was behind the times in this field. However nowadays the massive inflow of refugees here activated government to make essential steps in the section of education by organising specific programmes for refugees which is innovation for our school system despite the disagreement of greek parents. Although I would like to point out that a big number of teachers hired to teach such specific objects are not qualified enough, sometimes not at all. So the innovative trials will prove to be devastating if not things do not change. On the other hand I have noticed that more and more teachers are interested in improving their skills in the refugee field by participating in relevant programmes (like me in this programme) something which shows a big change in the greek educational staff.

I agree that schools wishing to continue with their monocultural approach and have their teachers lecture pupils on the national curriculum are going to face huge problems. We do need to face reality and take this opportunity to rethink schools with the refugees.Integrating migrants calls for more than just learn to tolerate other cultures: it calls for strength and enough open mindedness to become curious and interested in other cultures and the ability to feel at ease and improve ourselves in the continuous negotiation between different viewpoints and values which are all legitimate as long as they are respectful of human rights and civil laws.

I strongly agree with Prof. Dr. Hans Anand Pant. Germany offers a great support for the teachers on the Deutsche Schulakademie. The integration of refugees in our schools really provides a good opportunity to rethink schools in general. I think that in Croatia we are on the begginning of that proces. That new situation provoces schools to adapt. Everything begins with a new students and then teachers are coping alone. Our Ministery and our advisers in a Teaching agency have some supportive documents and seminars but good practice is still developing. In the meantime we are doing the best we can. Practice in many cases (and my school) confirms that love for the work required to integrate them can be a powerful driver for innovation at schools.

I think that in this historical moment, schools do need to be rethinked in many aspects. One of them necessarily has to be integration of migrants or foreigners in general. Italian school system has a lot of problems. The first is that it is the same since 40 years. Only a few teachers are well trained to face new challenges. I totally agree with prof. Pant and I’ve found interesting in the previous videos when they talked about involving every school member in these processes, first of all school managers. As a matter of fact, very often in Italian schools teachers train themselves autonomously and then they have to suggest new strategies to headmasters. But, if the headmaster is not well informed, the teachers’ ideas are put into practice only in single classes and only a few become good practices. The Deutsche Schulakademie is a very good example to follow, because migrants themselves can be protagonists of the topic and not only the object of others’ discussions.

Do you agree with this statement?
I agree with prof. Pant, because our didactic should be totally adapted to our pupils. So the arriving of migrant students could force us to change our scholastic system. It should not be monocultural, but really opened to all cultures, based on european values. People from other countries could really help us teachers to educate our pupils to values like open-mindness, tolerance, respect, freedom and democracy. It helps also about thinking from other perspectives.
Italian scholastic system has a lot of problems and it is strongly resistant to any change. It is not so easy to make proposals to change our daily school-life, because sometimes we find many obstacles in bureaucracy, headmasters or colleagues. And I absolutely complain the few possibilities we have to share our ideas and strategies with other colleagues. The Ministry must help us granting a quality formation. It should be compulsory also the presence of a psychologist at school, but not only one our per week; s/he should be in school during all the mornings.
