Department of public health: As health commissioner, I chose to focus on two health factors: food insecurity and obesity. I will decrease food insecurity statistics for the county, measured through self-reported food access, safety, and quality. Food should have 3 overlapping qualities; it should be nearby, nutritious, and affordable. I will also focus on obesity, lowering our county’s average population with a BMI >30, ensuring our county has access to green space and has incentives for healthy exercise habits. Focusing on food security will ensure healthy outcomes as well.

As a community health hospital responsible for providing health services and is an inpatient unit. In addressing disparities, as there is a sizable uninsured population, measuring access to clinical care of the uninsured, demonstrated by the percentage of the population under age 65 without health insurance, is optimal. Preventable hospital stays work further upstream to save healthcare costs. As we learned, 10% of hospital patients account for 75% of healthcare spending. Investing and tracking preventable hospital stays can decrease the cost of healthcare and increase the quality of life.

Church congregation: the church places great emphasis on home and community, having various outreach programs in homelessness, day care, hospital chaplaincy, etc. Therefore we have selected severe housing problems and child care centers. The child care centers are local businesses we collaborate with and can relieve strain of childcare off of working adults as well as increasing health outcomes from infancy. In addition, working with homelessness outreach programs to reduce severe housing problems will relieve the cost burdened congregants who participate and fund the church community. Severe housing: % of households with 1 or more housing probs such as overcrowding, high cost, lack of kitchen facilities.
Child care centers: # of child care centers per 1000 population under the age of 5

Community Living Program: Frequent Physical Distress -> people in more physical distress in community means that community living program likely has a larger role in providing at-home care. Access to Exercise Opportunities -> less access to exercise opportunities in the community provides an argument for community living services for at-home support.

City Department of Economic Development:1) Unemployment: Unemployed individuals experience worse health outcome and mortality as compared to employed population. While I, as the economic development commissioner, am working with business to offer employer-based insurance, I am hoping that it can also assist with the unemployment rate.

2) High School Graduation: I, as the commissioner, am working on recruiting new college graduates to a large technology company. High school graduation is the prerequisite for obtaining college education, while it is a strong indicator for many related metrics such as employment, financial ability, health outcomes, etc, which is why I chose this metric to improve on as it aligns with both my career goal to recruit more college graduates as well as to increase the overall quality of life and hopefully to decrease disparities in education and health.
