Why does Moore juxtapose Heston's Rally with the gun control rally?

Moore juxtaposes the NRA gun rally with the gun control rally that features the father of a child who was shot in columbine to persuade and anger the audience. The NRA rally takes place in Columbine following the shooting which shows how inconsiderate the organisation is. This clip of the NRA is juxtaposed by a clip of the father whose child was killed in the shooting. The father says, "there is something wrong with this country when a child can grab a gun so easily". This clip then cuts back to Heston at another NRA rally, Moore uses this to persuade the audience that Heston is insane and insensitive.

- Charlton Heston at pro gun rally advocating the use and possession of guns in America
- Changes to a protest following the Columbine shooting with a dad who lost his son talking about the appropriate use of guns
- Very casual interview with Matt Stone discussing different ways to express emotions especially anger for being different (South Park)
- Tells stories about students being expelled or suspended for seemingly ridiculous reasons that the schools think are showing violent tendencies
- News stories with specialists saying they all have the answer for the Columbine attacks- violent movies, South Park, Satan, black people. They then proceed to say Marilyn Manson six times
- this leads on to the interview between Michael Moore and Marilyn Manson. Mason comes across as calm and collected being empathetic towards the topic. He is sensitive and understands why people would blame him

The way that Moore presents Heston automatically impacts the viewer. He is seen a an insensitive and disrespectful man. He is portrayed in a way that he neglects the pleas of the people in mourning. Moore makes the audience take an automatic dislike to Heston.
Heston as seen as a man who rejects other peoples beliefs, Heston comes across as a man who is manipulative.

- In the first montage, the clips from the news are getting more and more ridiculous explaining the kids who show a remote example of violence were getting suspended and expelled. (e.g. kid got suspended for bringing toe nail clippers as it is viewed as a 'weapon', kid got suspended for pointing breaded chicken at a teacher and saying pew pew.) Towards the end of the montage they explain how the dress codes should be changed and shows a student pulling out around 10 guns from his clothing. This is mockery and shows the ridiculousness of these changes.
- All the news reporters are all playing the blame game for the violence among the kids (e.g. Marylin Manson, Satan, violent video games)
- These have an impact on the viewer mocking the Americans idea of the gun laws and partially entertaining the viewer as the stupidity of the new rules in schools and the extent of how far they are going

Moore's interview with Matt Stone highlights what growing up in Littleton can be like, Matt Stone emphasis just how "painfully normal". Stone talks about how he harnessed his anger into something creative and positive. He talks about the ridiculousness of the education system and the pressure that kids are under from as young as 6th grade. He disagrees with the unnecessary need to tell the children if they aren't in the top maths they will die poor and lonely. He mentions the disrespect of the NRA for coming to do a rally shortly after Columbine. Moore uses Stone as an example as someone who can use their frustration for something far more positive.

They went as far as suspending and expelling students for ridiculously minor reasons
- This was another aspect of blaming and pointing fingers on something that aren't the loose gun laws
- It would've sucked being a student in America as they became the number 1 suspects to shootings and violence.
- Children were seen as a threat through the fact that the Columbine shooters were student so the education board took full responsibility to ensure the safety
- In the clip with the boy pulling out the 10 or so guns from his clothing, Moore places that clip to make it seem unnecessary and a bit ridiculous but in reality its a good thing that the board of education is going to the full extreme

Moore uses a clip from a rally in Denver who are opposed to Marilyn Manson doing a concert there. Moore presents the side of the argument of people who are against Manson as slightly neurotic and ridiculous. Moore selects specific clips to make the people against seem aggressive and close minded.
- He presents the argument for Marilyn Manson as level headed and reasonable. Manson's interview juxtaposes the rally as he comes across as calm, Manson accepts why people blame him but questions the influence that the government has.
"Something is wrong in this country when a child can grab a gun so easily and shoot a bullet into the middle of a child's face - as my son experienced. A Tech 9 semi-automatic weapon, 30-bullet weapon, like that that killed my son, is not used to kill deer. It has no useful purpose. It is time to address this problem.

Manson's interview is edited alongside a rally aimed at stopping Manson going to Denver - the rhetoric of the clean cut speaker is in stark contrast with Manson's sensitivity and rational logic. The speaker says "Not without a fight you can't (come to Denver)" which is reminiscent of Heston's "from my cold dead hands". Ironically it is the clean cut speaker who speaks of aggression whereas the confronting black-clad figure of Manson speaks with empathy.
