         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>When rubbed by the wool cloth (black), the vinyl strip (gray) becomes negatively charged.  We were told that this combination provides a negative source in the lab.  The vinyl actually becomes negatively-charged by transferring electrons from the cloth to the vinyl surface. This is a charging by friction event.  These electrons stay where they are placed on the vinyl surface because vinyl is an insulator (electrons do not move freely on its surface). </strong></div><div><br><br></div>]]></description>

While the pith ball is touching the vinyl, electrons are being transferred via induction from the vinyl to the pith ball, making the pith ball host a negative charge.<br>3c. After the vinyl strip is removed from the pith ball, now both objects repel each other. This is because the vinyl still retains its negativity, but the pith ball also hosts a negative charge.
