“But my nose was bleeding all over the place” (45)

“Why the hell don’tcha shut up when I tellya to?” He sounded pretty nervous. He probably was scared he’d fractured my skull or something when I hit the floor.” (45)

Analysis:
These quotes discusses the social conlifct that Holden has with people around him. Although he antagonizes everyone, this scene was major as he got into a brutal fight with Stradlater, however Stradlater felt guilty about his actions. Although Holden doesn't have a negative relationship with his roommate, this was a little suprising to the readers as they never got into this big of a fight.

Although Stradlater is a (person)social conflict, I believe that he has social conflict with everyone around him and even with his mental illness' as he has to get over somethings in his daily life.

This quote also emphasizes how Holden get's along with his peers because Holden is the youngest, however he treats his peers like pals which is disliked by Stradlater and all the older guys as they believe they have superiority over him.

There are some characterizations in this section that highlights Holden's individuality and his interests in his journey to entering the adulthood.

This tone describes how he felt after his second ever fight with his peers because he described his qualities as a "pacifist" and explains how he doesn't like to get into fights.

</sub>

Quote: "Just to stop lying. Once I get started, I can go on for hours if I feel like it. No kidding. Hours" (58.)

Analysis: This scene of lying displayed by Holden isn't a scene to waste time, or to make the journey to New York seem short, however, it doesn't tell us about what he might do in the future, or the struggle that he is currently in. However, it does give us some insight into who he is as a character, and a teenager who is trying to find out who he really is. There are two things that has happened thus far that started some meaningful conflict or interesting conversations in this chunk. The first being Stradlater's possible actions towards Jane, the second being the connection between Ernest and his mother, who Holden seems to take a liking, or interest to, and the third his lie to the Lavender bar girls about Gary cooper. Judging based on these events, the connection can be made that Holden has some sort of sympathy for women who are at the misfortune of men, (or some other type of problem). It tells us that although Holden is willing to go the the most absurdist of lies, he doesn't do so without a purpose. He lies, at least in these excerpts, for the benefit of others. Holden is not a bad character by any means, as seen by his willingness to help other people(i.e. stradlater, ackley, person with the type writer), instead, he is just misunderstood.

This connects with the coming of age archetype as it reveals that Holden has pure intent, a characteristic of innocence.

His lying also proves significant if you look at his mental illness. His mental illness, and his inability to connect with others causes him to feel distraught with the world, separated if you will. Unable to control what goes on. He feels helpless. His lying serves as a way for him to escape this. To escape the harsh reality that he is trying to find himself in. Every time he lies, he goes under a different identity. The janitor, Jim, etc. Perhaps it is in these lies that he is trying to find the truth of who is he, and where he stands in this ever flowing river.

A carousel goes round and round and repetitively does that, meaning that Holden kept seeing her go around, over and over, but he took that very preciously as he laughed and smiled with her as she kept going. I found this a satisfying ending as he was finally able to reach the level of happiness and his stress level was reduced.

What are the expectations of the protagonist in your novel? Who holds your protagonist up to these expectations? Are they reasonable? Does s/he live up to them or defy them? Why?

Discussion: Expectations lie within the school he goes to and the friends/society he is in. They expect him to succeed in school and conform to the school image. This is a reasonable demand because what they are asking from Holden is simply to do well in school (like any other student) and to fit in. However Holden finds trouble doing this because he finds himself out of place in the societal mold ,hates the school he goes to and as a result doesn't apply himself. He particularly has no regrets throughout his expulsion (at least not yet) and no image of his future.

Further explanation on the expectations held for the protagonist (Holden: The school is a system in which they expect students to succeed in order to have a successful career. The schools standards are to have high grades and apply to colleges while Holden refused to do that which got him expelled from the school. Mr.Spencer, the ill but Holden's former history teacher is also like a mentor and person who lies these expectations as Holden always goes to him for support and advice while Mr.Spencer deals with Holden's grades and the steps into his future.

Discuss the social conflict your protagonist faces. Who (or what?) is the antagonist? What is the protagonist’s biggest conflict? Does your protagonist get along with her/his peer group? Why or why not? How might this conflict be resolved; How might the antagonist be overcome? → Can you make any predictions?

Discussion:
Holden has close connections with his roommates at Pencey such as Stradlater and Ackley, however he got into a brutal and bloody fight with Stradlater due to having too much beliefs of superiority. Although Stradlater is an antagonist in this section, Holden's mental illness' are also a part of conflicts that Holden has to go up against in throughout the story because it is a big part of his mental health and affects him in different parts of his daily life. Holden's biggest antagonist is Stradlater and things that revolve around him such as school, family and friends because he is very individual when it comes to him maturing to adulthood. Holden did somewhat get along with his peers until he had the fight which made him make a big decision to pack his stuff and leave Pencey a few days early. Conflict with Stradlater may never be resolved as Holden has now left Pencey forever and has no business to go back. The other conflict with his mental health may not be resolved as it is a mental illness, however it may be coped throughout his life with it.

Discuss symbols. What are the symbols in your novel and what do they symbolize? What do you think are the most important 2 or 3 symbols? What do they suggest about the protagonist and/or the conflict the protagonist faces?

Holden’s hunting hat

Represents his independence, he mentions that every time he wears it. It also represents his uniqueness because the hat is a hunting hat and it is very unusual for a person to wear it casually. He loves to stand out, however he sometimes feels that he is self-conscious to wear it. His hunting hat is red, just like his siblings hair, which could symbolize the strong connections he has/had with Phoebe and Allie.

2. Phoebe

His younger sister Phoebe is described as a very innocent, smart, clever girl and has a strong connection/bond with Holden. Because Holden calls her when he is in a place of problem, she could possibly represent intelligence.

3. The ducks in the pond

Symbolizes his childhood characteristics, innocence, and immaturity because the question of “where do the ducks go when the lake is frozen?” is a very curious question from Holden which brings out his innocent side. Depending on how the cab driver and the people responding to his question, it seems as if Holden is very innocent, naive and youthful because not a lot of matured adults ask those questions. It symbolizes how Holden is still in the early stages of his coming-to-age journey as he seems that he lacks experience in life. It also symbolizes and relates to Holden’s fears as he is afraid of change and disappearance as he didn’t take his brother's death well as well as is nervous for if the ducks die out or get taken away.

4. Pond

The pond is descripted as “partly frozen, and partly not frozen” metaphorically representing his childhood to becoming an adulthood.

5. Death

Symbolizes Holden’s fears because after Allie’s death, he seems that he hasn’t been recovering well and his life has been going downhill after it, such as smashing the garage windows, his mom being more ill and not being able to say goodbye to anything, even if it’s not a major part of his life.

6.Holden

Represents the coming of ages from childhood to adulthood with rebellion against raised expectations for him and anger.

7. Winter

Winter is usually symbolized as old, aging, loneliness, and usually represents a renewal chapter in life or an end to a chapter in life. It is also used alongside a message relating to painful scenes which could be Holden’s brothers loss and expel from pencey prep.

Discuss resolution. Discuss any or all of these topics:
1. How are the conflicts you talked about resolved?
Some major conflicts were resolved in the last few chapter and even the last few pages of the novel:
1. His conflict with Depression (Character vs. Self) - Though it was only momentarily, Holden for the first time throughout the entire book "felt so damn happy"(275). This marks a triumph over the depression that plagued him throughout the entire book
2. His conflict with school (Character vs. Society) - Throughout the novel we have seen Holden express his displeasure with school from the phonies to the classes to the "phony" nature of the inner workings of schools and the society based around it. However even after his complaints we see him go back to school showing his persistance to continue his education and maybe even a vision of a better future.
2. Is it a satisfying end? Why or why not?
Yes, because some of the major conflicts, such as holden against his mental illness' were not resolved, however they were improved as he finally got the chance to feel happiness and understand different aspects in his life.
3. Would you read more books by this author?
Yes
4. Would you recommend this novel? If so, to what type of person?
We would recommend this book to those needing a good in depth novel for english class because it is very engaging for a insightful book and has a diverse amount of literary devices throughout the book.

We would recommend this book to a person interested in unique plots, interesting journeys from childhood to adulthood, and generally meanings behind aspects in the text

5. What surprised you about the end? Why?
One surprising aspect was how holden finally found himself in a state of peace and happiness, especially at the resulting scene with Phoebe. He was able to realize that happiness is within the time he is living in and not always something major to look forward to.

"I mean I left schools before and places I didn't even know I was leaving them. I hate that. I don't care if it's a sad good-by or a bad good-by, but when I leave a place I like to know I'm leaving it. If you don't, you feel even worse" (4)
Analysis:
This passage in the introduction of the novel emphasizes Holden's emotion towards connections with people. He is describing that leaving a place behind doesn't allow you to have strong relations with people. It shows his sense of sensitivity when it comes to socializing. This could possibly also be because he didn't get to have a proper goodbye to his younger brother, Allie, who passed away from Leukemia suddenly showing how Holden likes to properly acknowledge the end of his chapters. This also makes a point on Holden's inability to say good-bye as he still has PTSD from his brother's loss which makes it difficult for Holden to say "good-bye" even though Pencey Prep was not pleasant for him.

This quote also applies to the coming-of-age archetype because the author is highlighting another "end" of Holden's childhood chapter.

Analysis: This quote from "The catcher in the Rye" reveals us the characterization of Holden. Although he is someone who is regularly flunking his classes, and schools for that matter, he still enjoys some aspects of the learning process. He adores the ecstasy of reading a good book, in fact he likes it so much he even goes on to say that he wishes he could call up the author whenever he felt like it. Despite him not being interested in much, if he finds the things that are to his liking he will undoubtedly be invested into it. It shows that he isn't necessarily the bad, flunking student he was made out to be, but instead a rather complex and realistic character who just doesn't fit the societal mold.

This applies to the coming of age archetype as it reveals to us that Holden has much to change and develop, and may in time fit this societal mold he has come to despise.

(19-20)

Analysis: This dialogue excerpt from "the Catcher in the Rye" shows Holden's relative innocence at the beginning of the novel. While he talks to his history teacher Mr.Spencer, he talks of how he'll miss going to Pency yet he doesn't know when or in a matter of fact why. In a sense this paints Holden (at this stage)as a sort of naive character who is not exactly thinking everything through and waiting for things to 'hit him' instead of doing something about it.

Analysis:
This quote characterizes Holden and puts him in the beginning stages of the coming-to-age archetype because it defines how he is innocent, immature and naive to the high school society at school where guys frequently have fights and beat each other up. This phrase also highlights Holden's traits because it shows how he stays out of danger:

“I’m a pacifist, if you want to know the truth” (46)

Based on the context of the story, it symbolizes Holden's individuality, rebellion, and journey to his adulthood life. He doesn't wear it in public because he feels that he'll be judged, however he wears it in other times. It represents his social life because he wears it more frequently throughout the book as he is maturing into the adulthood life.
