Understanding these various stages can help you understand how to process information and its retention.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Sensory Memory</strong></p><p>Sensory memory is the&nbsp;first stage&nbsp;where your brain registers incoming sensory details like sights, sounds and smells.</p><ul><li><p><strong>Duration:</strong>&nbsp;Lasts only a few milliseconds to about 2 seconds.</p></li><li><p><strong>Function:</strong>&nbsp;It acts as a quick snapshot, briefly holds incoming sensory information</p></li><li><p><strong>Role in Learning:</strong>&nbsp;Sensory memory acts like a filter. If you pay attention to something here, it moves on to short term memory.</p><p><br/></p></li></ul><p><strong>Short-Term (or Working) Memory</strong></p><p>This stage is a temporary workspace in our brain. It holds the information you are actively thinking about.</p><ul><li><p><strong>Duration:</strong>&nbsp;Holds information for about 20-30 seconds.</p></li><li><p><strong>Capacity:</strong>&nbsp;It typically can handle about 5-9 pieces of information at once. An analogy could be a small desk with limited space.</p></li><li><p><strong>Function:</strong>&nbsp;This is where you make quick decisions, carry out immediate tasks, solve problems. For example, math problems.</p></li><li><p><strong>Role in Learning:</strong>&nbsp;It is important for decision making, active thinking, understanding new concepts, and following instructions.</p><p><br/></p></li></ul><p><strong>Long-Term Memory</strong></p><p>This is the brain's&nbsp;permanent storage. Information stored here can stay with you for a lifetime.</p><ul><li><p><strong>Duration:</strong>&nbsp;Potentially lifelong.</p></li><li><p><strong>Capacity:</strong>&nbsp;Unlimited.</p></li><li><p><strong>Function:</strong>&nbsp;Stores all your experiences, knowledge, and skills over extended periods.</p></li><li><p><strong>Types:</strong></p><ul><li><p><strong>Declarative (Explicit):</strong>&nbsp;This is for&nbsp;facts (e.g. historical dates) and events (e.g. what you ate for breakfast)&nbsp;you can recall.</p></li><li><p><strong>Procedural (Implicit):</strong>&nbsp;This holds skills and habits&nbsp;you perform automatically, like knowing how to ride a bike or tie your shoes, without thinking about the steps.</p></li></ul></li><li><p><strong>Role in Learning:</strong>&nbsp;Forming the foundation of your ability and knowledge, the backbone of all learning.</p></li></ul><p><br/></p>]]></description>

This approach helps create and strengthen memory formation. </p><p><br></p><p><strong>Strategies Used</strong>: I incorporate visuals, anchor charts, manipulatives, like base-ten blocks, movement, and songs. Verbal and visual explanations into lessons helps with engagement. I allow students to build shapes, draw models, and even plot points in a life size quadrant.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Why it helps</strong>: How the brain processes and integrates sensory information is affected by trauma. Multi-sensory approach to learning can activate neural pathways, enhance retention and also support different learning styles. This strategy keeps students engaged and present. </p>]]></description>

These strategies help make learning more accessible for all students, to include trauma affected students. </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Strategy</strong>: Begin class with a brief routine, for example a calming math warm-up or a digital math game. Another strategy is a short mindful moment by allowing students to share how they're feeling by using visuals or a check-in circle. </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Why it helps</strong>:  Routines create a sense of psychological safety, essential for memory formation in trauma-affected brains. Emotional regulation supports function, which is important for working memory and the transfer of learning to new situations.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>In the book by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, he explains that trauma rewires the brain. The amygdala becomes overactive which then triggers fear. The hippocampus struggles to organize the memories. The prefrontal cortex, which normally helps with logic and control, shuts down. As a result, these traumatic memories are now stored as sensations, images, or emotions, rather than clear memories. Healing, he says, involves more than talking; it requires body-based therapies like yoga or EMDR to calm the nervous system and integrate those memories safely (van der Kolk, 2014).</p>]]></description>

When learning is meaningful and relatable, the brain is more likely to store it in long-term memory.
