The Mayan civilization existed for more than 2,000 years, but the "classic" period is where the civilization reached its peak. (during 300 AD ~ 900 AD)

- The written language of the maya was the only fully developed language in Mesoamerica during that time, where the glyphs represented not only ideas, but sound, which is like the modern english language we have today. (ex. A = ahh/ uhh sound)

- Had thirteen heavens ruled by sky deities or gods, and nine underworlds
- The worlds were positioned between four trees, at the north, south, west, and east corner of earth
- The fifth tree was position in the center to connect the three realms of earth, heaven, and underworld
- Religious ceremonies were conducted by priests, who fasted to purify themselves
- Animals and special offerings were made to the gods (precious stones, food, feathers, etc.)
- Also practiced human sacrifices on special occasions when the ruler was ill or the people were facing drought and famine
- Believed that more important a person was, more value their blood had (Blood was considered the most important offer to sustain the gods)
- New Year's ceremony was one of the most well-known rituals in Maya civilization (a color and direction was determined based on which day the New Year was on)
