1) What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

The poem tone is happy. He uses the word blithe which means happy and cheerful. The workers also seem to be singing melodious songs meaning they are sweet sounding. This is ironic because usually you think manual laborers in america to be tired and not happy working their job, but Whitman describes them as cheerful and happy to be working.

3) What images does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem?

The poet uses words to explain what is happening in the poem. We can use those words to help us imagine and picture an image of carpenters singing while measuring planks, or imagine a shoemaker sing while being sat on a bench. These all relate to each other because they're all occupied and singing happily. These images have created a perfect example of harmony through the poem. The reason for that, is because everyone is joyful and happy.

6) What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The theme of this poem is and what it shows is harmonized working ethics. The way they value society and America. This poem shows a lot of nationalism and everyone coming together, living in peace. It's a powerful poem that is for us to understand what it's like to be civilized people in America.

5. Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem?

I think a symbol is that he describes each workers doing their particular job. Such as the carpenter measuring his beam or the shoemaker singing on his bench. Towards the end of the poem it says "Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else". I think this is symbolizing each of their jobs is special to them and brings them their happiness.
