Using speaking samples similar to those they'll encounter in the assessment would be useful. This could help them gain confidence when they are doing role plays, presentations, or debates. After each practice, it´s crucial to encourage peer feedback, this not only helps them learn from each other but also reinforces their understanding of the assessment criteria.

If there are some students who struggle a lot, we should provide personalized feedback during practice sessions. Highlighting their strengths and areas for improvement should be advisable to offer specific suggestions for how they can enhance their speaking skills. (By M.A)

1. First of all, provide them with a good model of the test. Show them a video so they can familiarize themselves with the speaking test's structure.

2. Tell them what is expected from them in each part of the test and what the criteria are: IC, DM, L and P.

3. Practice mock tests in class: if possible, record and show them some samples and ask them to evaluate their classmates’ performance.

4. Once they have discussed their peers’ performance, it’s important to elicit their ideas and provide constructive feedback on them.

5. Finally, always provide a lot of pronunciation practice and intonation as well. Last but not least, make them aware of the importance of functional language.

(Paolo Zárate E.)

Regular Practice: Encourage daily conversations, watching English media, and participating in language exchanges. If not available, I tell students to just ask and answer a question out loud even if they are on their own, to help them with how they organise their ideas before speaking.

Functional Language Use: Focus on common expressions for opinions, agreements, and clarifications. Reinforce the idea that these set phrases are commonly used by native speakers.

Modeling and Feedback: In class provide examples of well-structured speech and offer constructive feedback on pronunciation, intonation, and fluency.

Simulated Conversations: Also in class try to engage in role-plays and mock tests to simulate real-life speaking situations.

Self-awareness and Reflection: Encourage self-assessment and reflection on strengths and areas for improvement.

MOTIVATING OUR STUDENTS TO SUCCEED THEIR SPEAKING TESTS

Building the student's confidence is essential to creating a supportive and encouraging atmosphere. Therefore, the teacher can familiarise students with the speaking exam structure, criteria and requirements by displaying the speaking test videos and Britanico PPTs. Furthermore, the teacher can provide tips to help students overcome their shyness, fear of judgment, and timing. For example:

a) Encouraging students to create a personal list of phrases and prompts to use during the speaking test, including cohesive devices, logical responses, a wide range of vocabulary and fillers to sound more natural, will be helpful during the exam.

b) Practicing vocabulary in various conversational contexts, such as discussions, debates, presentations, and narratives.

c) The students face different challenges according to their abilities, one of which is pronunciation, so focusing on intensive practice by drilling, linking, stress, and intonation in various patterns will motivate students to feel secure.

d) Another way is to practise functional subskills such as asking questions, clarifying, suggesting, agreeing, disagreeing, interrupting and paraphrasing. Therefore, students have opportunities to get involved in different types of dialogues on various topics and encourage a sense of pacing and coverage within the allocated time.

e) To boost the student's fluency and self-confidence, encourage students to record their performances enacting mocks.

f) Provide constructive feedback on students' speaking performances, especially to individual weak students.
How to Help Students Ace Their Speaking Test

1. First, make sure your students know exactly what the speaking test involves and how it's graded. Go over the format and criteria so there are no surprises.

2. Show them some examples of good and not-so-good speaking performances. Seeing models can help them understand what they should aim for.

3. Give them a nice range of functional phrases and expressions to practise with. That way, they can communicate more naturally and vary up how they say things.

4. Don't forget to build in plenty of practice time! The more they rehearse, the more confident and accurate they'll be on test day.

5. Get creative with activities that let them use the language in meaningful, real-world kinds of ways. Make it relevant to their lives.

6. After practice sessions, take some time to reflect using questions related to the speaking criteria. Identifying strengths and weaknesses helps boost improvement.

7. Last but not least, create a positive, supportive atmosphere in the classroom. A relaxed environment can work wonders for their speaking abilities!

Andrea Corbetto

MY WAYS ON HOW TO HELP MY STUDENTS IMPROVE AND MAYBE POLISH THEIR SPEAKING SKILLS

Firstly, to foster a supportive environment that builds confidence, it's crucial to prepare students for the speaking test. This can be achieved by showing them videos of the test (if they are available in the book or YouTube) and using presentations to explain the structure, criteria Británico uses, and time expectations. Additionally, teachers can offer strategies to manage common anxieties like shyness and fear of judgement.

Secondly, to help my students improve in the Británico speaking test, we should break down the format together. By analyzing the test structure (the 3 typical stages speaking test consists of) and the requirements, students will understand what they need to do to succeed.

Finally, to make it better, students can prctice talking by having a conversations with their classmates in pairs or small groups. They can talk about interesting things, pretend to be in the exam situations, and this will help them feel more confident and speak more easily.

By Justo Leandro Mogrovejo Vilca

First of all , regarding the difficulties in speaking my students have. They should be treated taking into account trategies for overcoming in particular these Language Barriers. That is to say, speaking slowly and clearly, focusing on clearly enunciating and slowing down my speech when it is really necessary!

Secondly, if there is something I have learnt about myself as a teacher that might influence my students’ speaking skills during these sessions is that I have to set up the speaking activities correctly and give understanding and valuable feedback!

. What is more, something I can do to help my students improve their speaking skills is to have students work in pairs and give them an opportunity to think before they speak by sharing their ideas with one classmate, and then speak up to the rest of the class.

Finally, I do believe we as teachers should encourage students to speak right from the first day. If not, as early as possible and not to wait till we teach them a stock of words, phrases or sentences. Also, we as teachers have to be more tolerant with our students especially if some of them simply repeat what they say. We must remember that even in the case ttaht a student gives one word answer to any question, okay we'd better bear it for the time being.

Elio Roger Verástegui Otiniano

Start with showing students the structure and stages. Let them know what is expected of them in each stage, what the criteria is and how they will be evaluated.

Provide a clear model by showing them examples, past evaluations and allowing some time in class to practise said examples. I think it's also a clever idea to let them know beforehand who their partners will be so they can get to know each other and get comfortable with each other.

If there's not much time in class to include extra practice, then there's the option to adapt a speaking exercise from the book or from the lesson in order to practise a specific stage of the exam.

Provide and practise useful functional language they might need during the assessment, such as interrupting, taking turns and so on.

After each practise provide them with feedback so they can notice what they can improve or what they did right. This will give them the confidence they need during their test.

By Diana Salazar

When it comes to speaking, it's important to ensure that students first focus on understanding what has been asked, before they attempt an answer, so that they can stay on topic. To my mind, students need to look at model questions and rephrase them so that they can elaborate relevant answers.

Another aspect to bear in mind is to make students aware that talking non-stop is not the same as being fluent in the language. In this sense, asking students to learn about the Speaking Criteria used to assess them in detail is key because this will help them to realise what is expected from them and foster effective communication.

Also, students should be encouraged to take every opportunity to practise. In my experience, you do not need a partner to practise as you could easily have conversations in your mind. In so doing, you do not only have the possibility of enhancing your vocabulary but your range of grammar structures as well.

Hope these comments are useful and live up to your expectations.
