This is where I got the idea of contrasting ends of the house - we are recladding it so could make the ends look like this by extending the walls to match the roof overhang. Would you do board and baton like this along sides and alternating red brick ends or vis versa? Or could you do this with something other than cedar as it is so expensive?

Here is our Padlet - a summary of what we are considering for cladding the exterior of our house and garage (garage will likely just be stained board and baton with tiled roof to match house, may use a splash of colour or contrast?).

We are relocating a non-earthquake effected house (quite similar to our Lower Moutere house) onto a 5000 sm section on the outskirts of Darfield. It will cost us $100K to put it on site (plus pad), then we plan to spend a max of $200Kish renovating/cladding etc. Todd will forward the floor plan and a couple of photos for you of it.

Please have a look and read - then we would really appreciate your advice on the following:
-what cladding? where to contrast and what with?
-what colour for stain and joinery?
-how would you do a covered walkway feature between garage and house that is cost effective?
-we will email the floor plan and a couple of photos of the house we are relocating. We are using a similar style floor plan to our LM house - so if you can just cast your eye over it and see if the dimensions of the living rooms are right and the size and shapes of the living room/scullery/laundry doors and windows are correct (will double glaze rest of the house but to existing sized windows). We have got one 'constraint' with design and that is the neighbour has the biggest/ugliest shed ever on the boundary that our dining room end of the house looks out on. So we aren't sure what to do here window/doorwise. I was thinking window seat in the dining room that you can sit at the table at and then big window or corner sliding door out to front and side (sounds expensive though)? Wondering whether it is silly having both living room sliding doors opening out to the same direction?

Thanks so much for your help

Cheers
Nic and Todd

I like them all!! I marked up the plans (in another email) before looking at the padlet post so there could be some overlap.
Cladding raises issues and multiple claddings raise the risk matrix of the house so your designer may comment. I'd brick the bay window as you need a bigger footing for brick veneer and its not too far to fall in an earthquake so you will avoid the expenses of the whole house having increased footing; put a durable cladding to the sun-burnt North and West (maybe vertical corr or Freemans 'Alpine Tray' in colorsteel 'Flaxpod') and on the South same coloured board and batten (use Lawson Cypress?) using Resene Lumbersider 'Cool Colours' Flaxpod. Ditto for garage. Cedar with honey coloured cedar oil to link and entry AND to the alfresco gable Living-Dining wall if you are able to do it.
For colour panels I like the idea of using them INSIDE the link. NZ UV is too much for that stuff.
Windows could have oiled cedar 'architrave surrounds' for a neat contrast.
If you are going conc slab then you could put polystyrene under it and polish it in the link- entry-lounge-living- laundry areas with rugs and carpet in beds and hall?
And....spanner in works...would it be economic to build new from scratch? I'll shut up there!
cheers
Leigh
