A child's home language should be valued because it increases their self-esteem by being able to use the language in setting. For example, if children aren't treated any differently because of the languages they speak and it boosts their confidence to speak their language and learn another one. Another reason the home language should be valued is that it can help the learning of the new language by helping them understand what everything is and relating the languages together to help them learn the new language e.g. cat in English is said …… in French, so the children make this relation with words and language.

One benefit of valuing a child’s home language is that it will boost a child’s self-esteem and confidence because they will feel more at ease with using their home language if the practitioners are valuing it which also makes them feel like their more involved because they are being accepted that their different. Another benefit of valuing the child’s home language is that it can create better bonds with parents because the parents are happy that they are being valued for their home language so they are more likely to cooperate with the practitioners more if the practitioners are cooperating back.

P2 - Explain the benefits to children of bilingualism.

Many children who come into setting with a different language will become bilingual, which means they know and can speak well more than one language. A benefit to a child being bilingual is that they can able to learn new words easier and faster because they have picked up two or more languages they find it easier to learn simple things like words more than other children who aren’t bilingual. This helps the child’s development because if the child can speak more than one language quicker then they will be able to learn their development skills easier and faster too, for example their language development.

Another benefit to children of bilingualism is that they have good listening skills and can listen to others better than other children who aren’t bilingual. This is because they are constantly listening for either of the two languages to be spoken and because they know two languages they have to listen extra hard for their second language because they don’t know it so well. This helps the child’s development because if the children gain good listening skills from having to listen more by knowing two languages. This will help develop their social development by allowing them to have better listening skills from being bilingual.

P3 - Explain how adults work in partnership with families to enable the creation of an inclusive environment to support children who have another home language.

One way that the adults work in partnership with families is that they include everyone in events such as ‘Stay and play afternoons’ which is an afternoon where all parents get invited in to spend the afternoon playing and doing fun messy activities that they don’t always get the chance to do. By including and inviting everyone they are building a relationship with the parents to get to know them more and help with any issues they have regarding them and their child be EAL. This is inclusive because everyone is invited and no one gets left out even though some families may not speak fluent English it doesn’t matter they are treated the same and it’s an opportunity to build on their knowledge and share with others. This then supports the children because they can see their home language and new language being used together to help enhance the new language and they also can use it in their activities with simple things that everyone can join in with and also some activities may be mixed to help them speak both languages.

In setting they have different types of partnerships. As well as the practitioner making a bond with the family, they will make a partnership with the child as well. There is a cycle where the partnership is shared between all three; parents, practitioner and child. From this it shows that for there to be a good partnership in setting with practitioner and child the parents would have a good partnership with practitioner too. Also a setting will gain partnership outside their school with other additional support to help them e.g. extra tuition for English, to help them learn how best to teach the child to progress them further within their language development.

M1 - Analyse the extent to which respecting and valuing the home language of children could impact on the development and learning.

When you have a children with English as an additional language in setting you have to value their home language as well them learning our language and by doing this it impacts on their learning and development. You can value and respect a child with English as an additional language by allowing them with choice of language and not stopping them from speaking their home language in setting as this then helps to open up the child and impact on their development and learning by in a good way.
Value and respect is, ‘First languages are special, and can help families share their values and traditions and cultural identity.’ (Council, 2016)

It helps to encourage the child to progress further. It would impact on them emotionally by giving them confidence by letting them choose the language they want to speak. Giving them the confidence to speak their own language around others and not feel awkward and singled out helps them development their self-esteem and become happier which will help them learn English better too. This then relates to them further development by helping them develop their social development because when they become confident their will begin to want to make friends and will gain the confidence to do this without feeling like an outsider and that they are different when they aren’t. Relating this to the topic this isn’t always the case and this doesn’t always happen the child may feel that they can’t speak their own language and resent a little bit because they feel left out and different to the other children.

In my setting the teachers will help to respect and value the parents by encouraging them in for chats to speak to them so that the parents can get to know their culture and languages easier to know how to help the child better which is valuing the home language.

D1 - Evaluate partnership work with families in supporting the development of English for children who have another home language.

As a practitioner in setting it is really important for them to have a good partnership with the parents of children with English as an additional language because together you both support the children when learning the new language and valuing their home language. One way that a partnership can be built and form is to have one on one meetings with the parent, this will help the family and the practitioner to have a discussion about school and home to help the practitioner understand the child on a more personal level to help their learning e.g. likes and dislikes and then the parents learning about school to know about how to help their learning at home and their progress. This help is very important because it has been said that ‘it’s very easy for a child with EAL to fall behind because of their additional language and these children often come out with poor results’ (Department for children, 2007) and this is why we need to help them and support them further with partnerships with parents.

Although to every idea there are strengths and weaknesses. A strength of having this technique is that because the parents and practitioners are meeting for these one to ones often they will begin to create a bond and the parents which then helps the child learn better as they are getting more help and they will also feel more at ease and confident with what they are doing and learning if they can see that their parents and teachers are getting along their progression in language is making them happy and proud. Another strength is that when the parents are speaking to the practitioners they are learning more about them and their language and religion if they have one. This helps because the more the practitioner knows about the child and their language the easier it will be for them to help them and know how to encourage them to progress further.

On the other hand even though this is a really good idea and could work really well to help both parents and child to support the language it isn’t always the case. A weakness of this activity could be that when someone doesn’t speak fluent in your language e.g. English they might be put off by having a one on ones with practitioners as it might make them feel uncomfortable and as if they are being singled out even though they aren’t. They might not want the extra help because they don’t really want to be pointed out as being different because of their child being an EAL child. Another reason could be that most children who actually come into setting who are learning English as an additional language have parents or just one parent who doesn’t speak any English or very little. If a practitioner was faced with this then it puts a huge barrier up because if you can’t actually speak to the parent it makes it harder to help the child and support their home language.

My experience within setting is that there is always someone on the door when the child comes and goes so that the parent can always have contact with the teachers, which helps when they are trying to gain and build up a partnership up from seeing them and talking to them. If this wasn’t done within setting then the parents wouldn’t speak and communicate with the practitioners as much. It would form a barrier between them as parents wouldn’t want to come fully into setting just to make communication, the practitioner has to be there to seek any opportunity that they will talk.
