Chapter 9 Discussion by Annika Odt

Welcome to our Chapter 9 Discussion! Please look at the scenario on the slip of paper you were given with a partner. Consider these three things... 1) Does the scenario fall into autonomy within a teacher's personal life, or could it impact their employment? 2) What court case does this scenario connect with? 3) Have you ever experienced a situation where a teacher's personal life became a distraction in the classroom? How was it handled, and do you think it was resolved appropriately? Look at pages 122-129 to help!

Technically they cannot get in trouble. I’m a 2004 New York case, sexual relationships within a 1-2 years of graduation can be prohibited and result in denied tenure. This relationship was 4 years after graduation so it seems to be “ok”. Tessa had a teacher marry a student 4 years after she graduated. He is still a teacher at the school.

1) It would definitely impact the teacher's employment, since this was done at school to a student in front of other students.

2) Yes, can be dismissed for unprofessional conduct with students (p. 123).

3) Not in this way- teachers taking time away from school due to cancer/parents passing away. A teacher in my high school was arrested for assault/domestic dispute, he continued to be a teacher for many years after this.

● Scenario #10. This scenario does not fall into autonomy within teachers a teachers personal life. I would effect their career both because courts determined that teachers should not be entered in sexual/romantic relationships with students within "1-2 years after graduation" as well as the fact that the widespread publicism of this teachers relationship is problematic for how she would be viewed by her students and would effect her efficacy as a teacher.

● This scenario does not connect to a specific case, but results of named cases are discussed in the book on pg. 123

● teacher affair with student: was fired.
