Summary

In the book Space Junk by Karen Romano Young is about how we are polluting Earth's orbit. The First thing that happens is when 2 satellites crash into each other, both satellites were traveling at the speed of 17000 miles per hour which caused many junk in space. The second thing is that People sent rockets to space which was the new way of exploration. That went bad because their experimental rockets exploded in Earths atmosphere, then there is even more shards of metal in The orbit of earth. Then it talks about the satellite orbits in Earth. The First one is LEO which stands for Low Earth Orbit which is the closest to Earth. Then MEO which stands for Middle Earth Orbit. Since LEO is the closest it circles Earth faster than MEO. Then Comes HEO which stands for High Earth Orbit so it’s the farthest from Earth. Then we come into the atmosphere of Earth Which Are Troposphere then Stratosphere then Mesosphere then Thermosphere and last but not least Exosphere. Researchers say you can send rockets but only if they come back to Earth. That’s my summary of Space Junk.

Interesting Section

The Section that I thought was interesting was in pg.6 and pg.40. On pg 6 it lures you in by the first quote “If we don’t change the way we operate in space, all this results in an exponentially increasing amount of debris, until all objects are reduced to a cloud of orbiting fragments that are capable of destroying any spacecraft that attempts to operate anywhere within that cloud” by Donald Kessler in 2014. This quote really hooked me up because he’s saying that if we use satellites in space and when it becomes non-operational, it will be a debris in space. It keeps on accumulating by forming a cloud of junk in space. Then in the Book it talks about 2 satellites crashed into each-other (one of them was called Iridium 33 the other was Cosmos 2251) because Iridium 33 was going out of mission it crashes into Cosmos 2251 which makes a-lot debris. The quote supports this because that’s how we send things to space and it turns into junk which is now in orbit with us. The quote on pg.40 is also good because “If we don’t do anything space will soon become inaccessible because of the large amount of debris and high risk of collision” by Claude Nicolier. That goes to the first quote and it supports the information by technically saying that if we don’t do anything space will get filled with junk like those two satellites.

Bryce O’ Conner said “we didn’t think about space junk” who is now a safety officer at NASA. Thomas Cremins said that “More work needed to be done”. “This past year, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about space junk remediation”. These two people’s ideas are different because on one hand Bryce said that they didn’t consider about space junk but Thomas said that in the past year they spent a lot of time considering space junk remedies. Both of their Ideas are alike because They are focusing on space junk.
