This panel is in the chapter "The Shabbat, on page 142. The caption says: "No scream in the world could have relieved my suffering and my anger. There is nothing more here than a fully blacked out panel, with no characters, objects, or quotes in sight. Personally, I feel that this panel is incredibly underrated and very important; it shows the depth of Marjane’s feelings at the time, which were never fully concrete. I see it as a complete transition for her from child to adult, because after this, she is no longer blind or shielded from seeing the truth about the state of Iran. She is at the lowest possible point in her life so far, where she even went as far as to say that no scream could have alleviated her from the anger she felt. This panel singularly magnifies and captures the sentiment of an entire nation by stating one simple sentence. The graphic weight is utterly overwhelming and reflects the emotions she is flooded with in this moment.

I choose this panal becase of the graphic weight and the emanata. They both show Marjane change in emotions. The black graphic weight symbolizes the darkeness immorlities she just learned about her family and the overall history of Iran. The emanata shows the weight this has affected her. Marjane is a child who just leanered about the imoral act in Iran which may be diffuclt for a child to understand. Marjane's dialogue shows that she wants to esape and leave. This could relfect how dark the stories were and she may be feeling overwhelmed. Marjane wanting to ecape may be a way for her to process and think about what her father told her. She then use her imagination to imagine what it would feel like to be in a cell full of water. This shows Marjane's thinking process and potrays her innocence.

I liked this panel because it depicts how women loose their freedom due to oppressive regime. Women showed their opposition letting a few strands of hair show the graphics like a downturn smile, strand of hair and the hands show the modern women to be rebellious. Fundamentalist women wear full covering from head to toe with just the face showing. The modern women shows protest against religious repression. The caption that was given in the picture and the description of the picture shows how the government policies affect women's behavior and forces them to be devout just for their safety while in public. I liked this panel because I can identify myself with a feelings of Marjane. As certain practices in our culture shows gender discrimination and forced to do certain things like wearing traditional Indian dresses and excessive jewelry on family get together which makes me rebel against such practices.

This panel from "the wine" chapter is particularly insightful as there are several important messages conveyed by it. First, Marjane's uncle is seen to be the direct focus of the panel, as he wears a white shirt as opposed to everyone else in black. This is an example of graphic weight. Him being dressed this way could show how he is rather rebellious, and hence rejects the idea that all his family members and fellow citizens are one body of people without identities. In addition, Anoosh hyperbolically states "we might as well just bury ourselves now", reinforcing his desperation for freedom and critism of this authoritarian style of governing he must accustom to. Later, he also states "without them {parties} it would be psychologically unbearble", once again reiterating this idea of an opressive climate, but also linikng between the psychological issues that mostly Pery and Dick faced during In Cold Blood.

This panel is in chapter two in book one, the caption says "and so went the revolution in my country". To understand this panel you need context from the panel before which states "the revolution is like a bicycle when the wheels don't turn it falls". As you can see in this panel there is an enormous group of people that have fallen over as well as the bike. This panel has a deeper meaning, when the wheels don't turn the revolution begins, and in this panel there is chaos and the wheels on the bike aren't spinning which means the revolution has begun. This is my favorite panel because it has a deeper meaning to it and all it has a black background and the color black symbolizes death and chaos. It also shows how there are people falling everywhere as well as the bike which can can also tell us that the country itself is beginning to fall and turn into complete havoc.

I selected this panel due to the events in the chapter, “Persepolis.” Within this chapter, this panel provides the reader some relief despite the war, protests, and Marjane’s romanticization of martyrdom. The sense of relief the reader feels is exaggerated by the composition of the panel. The lack of background and details provides focus towards Marjane and her father. The only detail is a handbag that is illustrated for consistency purposes. Additionally, their faces appear rather iconic on the McCloud scale, allowing for the reader to further sympathize and project their feelings. The emotional impact of this panel is executed successfully through these comic conventions.

I love how dedicated she was to being the prophet at such a young age, and I find the way she imagined herself as the prophet and how the community will obey her quite funny. Her wanting to become the prophet at such a young age truly emphasized how she wanted change for Iran because of how inconsiderate the laws were for the community of Iran. Therefore, she wanted to make Iran a better place for everyone. Plus, the bright sun figure around her head highlights that she wants to be the light for the people of Iran, and depicts hope and savorism for the people. She wants guide them towards a better path.

This makes Marji think her family is very fascinating and wants to get to know more about their past. Although this may seem like a dark topic the Uncle is bringing up, this is actually very exciting for Marji because as she compares her family to others, she realizes how much more interesting and special hers is. This is clearly shown in her thought bubble by her very enthusiastic tone. The Uncle points a finger at himself to show that he is Incredible.

I enjoy many things about this panel. The main conventions shown in this dramatic yet simplistic panel are the character's face, camera angle positioning of his hands with an object and graphic weight of the panel. The use of cigarettes mixed with his facial emotion really shows us his regretful relief almost as if he didn't want to lose his connection with his son but is still happy he is safe, but still needing and depending on the cigarette for comfort, plus adding the dark background really conveys his depressive situation. The camera angle really lets us get up and personal with the character, like her telling us his story in real life.

In this panel, we can more clearly understand Marjane's view on her situation and experiences. Marjane uses a logical argument to deconstruct the ways of a dictatorship, which is what she most closely thinks of the current government. Notable is the emenata used with her eyebrows and smile. It is quite clear that she is rather discouraged and hopeless as she has come to realize the oppression she faces as an Iranian woman. However, in the second speech bubble the tone seems to shift. Marjane now describes showing her hair or putting on makeup as an act of rebellion and looks beyond her prior fears as a slim sign of hope. There is definitely graphic weight, as Marjane is black, and the rest of the panel is white, highlighting her loneliness and lack of support from both her family and fellow citizens. This is not necessarily due to them disliking her, but more importantly their fear of being punished in a highly authoritarian state.

I chose this panel of the graphic novel “Persepolis” because it highlights the horribleness of the war. School children were bribed that Heaven was better then current life on earth, and given a "key to heaven" they would wear around their necks in battle. The first part of the panel shows all of the bribed children slain in war. The scene is so brutal and heartbreaking to see, leaving the reader shocked, and creating a negative atmosphere. The panel after shows Marjane partying, as if nothing was happening. The party Maryjane has, overlooks the fact that innocent children were killed, expendably. this contrast shows how horrific the war was and brings to mind a feeling of inequality in their society.

I chose panel due to the idea of conflict in her life that it constructs. It helps present the strict restrictions placed on Iranian woman. In the caption, Majane shows a feeling of confusion. She knows that she needs to respect her own culture, but within she still holds true the Western and modern element. The chapter as a whole presents her idea of being religious, but also rebelling against it and having the courage and freedom to do so. The padlet specifically highlights this conflict with the two contrasting images. The left side shows her Western identity and the right so her religious identity. The fact that it allows us readers to visualize it was one of the reasons why I enjoyed this panel so much.

This is my favorite panel from Chapter 5, The Letter. This is because this is when Marjane is starting to come to terms with the injustices in the society she lives in and even in her home. The different uses of captions and speech and thought bubbles portray her feeling about these injustices and show that she does not feel okay with riding in her dad’s nice car or having a maid at home during the revolution that is happening. It links to the overall theme of power, politics and justice as it displays that she disagrees politics of her house and the power that she can be inferred to have because she drives a nice car and has a maid. It later on in the story is shown that she stands up for the injustices and wants to make a change and this panel can foreshadow this.

This is my favourite panel from 'Cigarette'. It takes a slogan 'inject blood into the veins of society' as literal, giving a grotesque image of the slogan. It shows how Marjane does not support the fundamentalist revolution, showing Iran, as a modern republic as an unwilling patient of the revolution. The image makes us feel the same with her. It shows a very gritty slogan from the revolution. It uses clear emanata, showing the emotion of “society” and Marjane. It is disturbing and stands out in the section. It links to power, politics and justice. Because this image is a criticism of the fundamentalist revolution, showing how the ideas are being forced onto Iran. The revolution is forced upon Iran's people, and insignificant people like Marjane are forced onto these ideals. Of an extreme Islamic Republic. This critisizes the consequences of the revolution and the overthrow of the Shah, as well as the process of revolution as a whole. Much like the title "cigarette", Marjane started smoking to defy her mother, as a symbol of revolution. But the fundementalist revolution is at a much larger scale, and un-necessary, like her smoking.

I chose this panel of the graphic panel because it highlights the hope that was there for a short time durng the war. It starts with showing that he tested a lot of priministers trying to suggest there was going to be some change, however, the fact that he was so picky and passed on a dozen candidated shows that he is not actually trying to find the perfect fit but actually wasting the countries time. The excuses he gives are also pathetic since one of them is that they were too short or too think which shows that he is never going to pick someone and that he keeps throwing out any excuse to try and avoid responsibility.

I chose this panel because it shows how her grandmother was upset with Marjane for what she has done. Marjane's reaction too what she has done of accussing a man of a crime to save herself shocks her grandmother who calls her a Selfish bitch. This was one of the worst things Marjane has ever done with her life. Grandmother's disappointment in her comes from not telling a lie but having no concern for another human being. The graphic of Marjane laughing shows her heartless she had become. However the speech bubble that says that she doesn't want to live with the guilt of disappointing her grandmother. The reflection of herself in the mirror shows how she percieves herself and would like to change her attitude. The harsh language used by the grandmother indicates that Marjane thinks that she is better than others and deserves the freedom to do what she wishes. How her grandmother finds this attitude despicable contrary to raise her reaction.

This is in the fourth chapter of the book so it is relatively towards the start. I chose this panel because it shows how Marjane is still transitioning to her new "western" life style. In the panel, Julie is going out and does not address her as she leaves and slams the door. This is very unusual to Marjane as in her culture, parents are sacred. Marjane then offers to make her mom a cup of tea to be kind and comfort her. She then goes on to spend the night with her talking. This is my favorite panel because I think this is one of the first and major points in the graphic novels where Marjane is exposed to the familiar culture of the Western world and realizes how different it is. Also, the use of illustrations in the panels gives a clear image and ability to interpret what is going on. This contrasts to the first book as she thought she wanted to live in the western society and would enjoy it more, however, this panel shows how she is uncomfortable here and did not fully understand the differences in cultures.

In this panel, she refuses to wear ear muffs, maybe highlighting how she doesn’t want to adapt to the new Western culture that she is now a part of, and wants to keep her Iranian identity and stay true to her culture. Although she’s in a different country, she still tries to keep what she had before, despite her indifferences with her own country, overall showing her strength.

In this panel she talks about how she is very joyful because her parents would not allow her to eat pasta back at home. This panel also shows us a bunch of straight/sad faces even on the nuns faces, probably because of Marjane disturbing their peace. The colors in this panel contrast each other which can also lead back to the characters seen in this panel such as Marjane being filled with joy while eating her pasta, and the Nuns being annoyed at her because she is being loud.

I think this is the most interesting panel for “the veil” because of a few key reasons. The first reasons is that it uses graphic weight very interestingly because everything but the bus and its route is black signifying that the only safe place for the protagonist at this time was this bus ride everyday and that she had nothing else. The second reason I find this panel interesting is because the line it tries to explain is all about this month of treachery marjane has just been through and all she had during this time was the train and it does so my creating the chaotic routes of the train accompanied with the graphic weight mentioned previously. Furthermore, it captures the emptiness the character felt as all there is in this panel is a single train and nothing else to take away from this image. Although it is not the most detailed panel I think I reflects very well on how marjane was actually feeling and lets the reader interpret her struggle in their own way. It is also the biggest panel on the page making the readers attention towards it even greater.

This is my favourite panel in chapter "skiing" because it shows how even though her friends seemed liberal and modern women, they still have traditionalist values. It is interesting because they look like they are liberated, but when they find out Marjane has lost her virginity before marriage. One of them says "What's the difference between you and a whore?". They are her friends but they find out she lost her virginity, they police her life the guardians of the revolution. The second panel shows that she is literally and symbolically separate from her friends because of this dilemma. To her friends, the West had damaged Marjane and therefore isolated her. There is also an interesting contrast in characters. They dress like somewhat modern women, with make-up and talking about boys, but Marjane, the one that lived in Austria for 4 years talked less about make-up and did not wear heavy make-up. However, the fact she lost her virginity made her more Western and "un-pure".

Marjane wanted to get married to start a new life and have new beginning. she thought she was marry someone she cared about and it was going to bring her happiness. but in reality it didn't change her life and ultimately added to her struggle. The panel graphic weight shift from white to a dark black background which can show the lack of hope in her marriage or the lack of happiness between the two. I thinks this panel shows that Marjane thought getting married would change. The left panel is what Marjane wanted to be but the right is the reality.

This is a panel from the middle of "The return", a chapter in book 2 of 'Persepolis'. I chose this panel due to the brutal images shown, along with the deeper meaning the author hid beneath it. for some context, Marjane returns after the war and has an unusual feeling towards the place on second glance. She said 'I felt as if I was walking through a cemetery". The fact that she feels her home country is a cemetery shows how many lives were lost, making the reader feel a sense of sorrow. The graphicness of the white bones on the black background intensifies the feeling of horror. The color white has connotations of innocence, or peace, while the color black has connotations of darkness or negativity. The panel itself is a combination of both strong colors, creating juxtaposition and a feeling of awkwardness. The color white represents the innocent people who were forced into war and killed. Meanwhile the black could represent the leaders who pushed them to their demise. Either way both of them were buried. This creates an ironic effect, as both of the colors are under Marjane's feet, and remain an imperative part of history,

I chose this panel from chapter 11 because I think that it illustrates the chaotic and stressful nature of her experience when returning home. The frame alienates Marjane by only detailing her, while leaving the others in the frame as silhouettes. This also serves to depict her feeling of stress with the overwhelming amount of welcoming by her family, and it literally shows that through her running in the frame. Also, all of the silhouettes have large grins and are chasing after Marjane. This is symbolic of how she felt, even though it isn't what actually happened when she returned home. The contrast between her and the others in the frame portrays her alienation, and emphasizes the chaos and stress that she felt upon returning home. I think that the caption at the bottom, referring to her reunion as "the visits", links to the chaos and stress that she feels by connotating her family reunion with a endless repeating cycle, making her feel crazy.

The simple sentence within the text box at the top left, emphasizes the fact that he had a very painful death. This splash panel fits every body part of the dead man, to fit in as much detail and allow the reader to understand how much pain the man is in. In addition, the mcloud scale of this panel is very detailed because you can see every detail of the person's body, all his wrinkles to represent his weakness, tiredness and pain he has gone through. Lastly, the graphic weight of black shows that the man's life has taken a terrible turn and that he has fallen into a pool of darkness.

The illiterate writing in the text box emphasizes that the only person Marjane wants to hear her is her mom. Almost as if they have some sort of secret language that only the two of them can understand. The writing outside of the panel “She’s so fat!” highlights that Marjane is trying to say this in secret since it is quite offensive towards the person she’s saying it to, but she says it to her mom because she knows that she will find it amusing which shows how close they are.
