He pushed us and also helped us be proud of our hard work. In addition, he had this magic way of letting us know he cared about us as individuals, and maybe most importantly, he was able to help students connect and bond with one another. It was my first year in Public School and my teacher's name was Mrs. Gay. She was old to my 9 year old eyes; she was tiny, stooped- over, gray-haired and she wore her classes on the tip of her nose. She was kind, dependable and focused. Kindergarten through 3rd grade I went to Catholic School. The nuns were cruel, often unkind and there was no fun to be had, the expectation was that you spoke when spoken too. I remember that Mrs. Gay would smile and pat us on the back and say "Good Job, I'm proud of you." I had intended to graduate and become an actuary, and when I shared that with the professor, he told me to meet him after the class. He told me that he saw that I had all of the makings to be a great teacher and to reevaluate my desire to become an actuary. It wound up being the best class I had ever taken, and it was the impetus that sparked my educational journey.
