He also mailed a camera (pg7)and other belongings to himself at a post office in Fairbanks, Alaska. From the gas station (pg5) , McCandless hit the highway (pg6)and began his journey north. Along the way, he stopped at various points to work and earn money for supplies, eventually making his way to Alaska where he planned to live off the land. Tragically, McCandless' adventure ended in disaster, and his body was found four months later in an abandoned bus in the wilderness.

Anaylsis: I think Chris is crazy for wanting to go out on his own leaving everything behind to challenge himself. I admire him as well I think it takes character to just give up everything to experience life. Maybe sometimes in life you have to be willing to take a risk on yourself and pursue your life goals.

He made his way on foot, using a rudimentary map and his own ingenuity to figure out how to get around. He faced a number of difficulties along the road, McCandless eventually made it to the Kantishna Hills(pg11), where he camped out in an abandoned bus he called the "Argo".(pg13)  McCandless' destiny was sealed during the moose season(pg11), when hunters were out in full force. Four months later, a helicopter(pg13) search party discovered his dead after he fell ill and with broken bones(pg13) proving unable to return to civilization . Overall, McCandless' adventure and the difficulties he encountered while surviving in the bush are better explained in chapter two of Into the Wild. Additionally, it introduces Ron Franz as a character and explores the idea of human connection and how it might impact our lives.including fractured bones and other wounds picked up while food-hunting. McCandless came across other individuals who were also surviving off the land as he traveled further into the bush. One of them was a retired prospector by the name of Ron Franz who took McCandless under his wing and taught him useful survival skills. Franz, who was older than McCandless, also related the tale of his own trek to Alaska, and the two men grew close.


Anaylsis: I think we all saw this coming Chris was on his finally days alone and dying with pain in the bus all alone. His only hope was if someone found him in the bus, he chased after his dream of going up north and he accomplished it.

Analysis: I think Chris is crazy for giving up all his money for the school to a charity. He was willing to risk his future to chase his dream of traveling to Alaska. I wonder why he couldn't buy a ticket to Alaska with that money. The small town of south Dakota was very kind to him; he was able to get a job and a place to live for a couple of days but had to continue his journey up north.

He stops in Bullhead City(pg27), Arizona where he works for a few days to earn money for supplies. The temperature in the desert reaches 120 degrees(pg27), making it difficult for Chris to do manual labor. He meets a group of vagabonds(pg30) who are living in the desert and they introduce him to the Wellteco canal(pg35), which provides a source of water. Chris decides to canoe(pg35) down the canal in order to get back into the US. He manages to get into the US and travels to Los Angeles and right after travels to Las Vegas with no money, no ID.

analysis: Chris is a trooper, he doesn't care what gets in his way he will find a way to overcome in that challenge and push forward to reach his final destination. Although he has no money he still manged to survive this crazy journey he is going through. As we read more and more into the book we also realize he has been near us in his journey and we all have no clue what people go through everyday.

He eventually arrives at the Niland Slabs(pg44), a remote area in the California desert where he sets up camp in a trailer belonging to a man named Burres(pg 46). While living in the trailer, McCandless spends his days exploring the surrounding wilderness and writing in his journal. He also begins to experience health issues, likely due to his limited diet and exposure to the harsh desert environment. Despite these challenges, McCandless remains determined to live a simple, solitary life in the wilderness.

Analysis: In this chapter we see Chris settle down for a good amount time. He was working at McDonald's and gave his real name and his true identity. He was willing to risk his journey and came back to reality of the world to survive. But knowing chris he had to go back on his journey and continue traveling.

He left behind all of his possessions, including his identification and money, and set out into the wilderness with only a small backpack and minimal supplies. Despite the challenges he faced, McCandless remained determined to live off the land and experience the wilderness to the fullest. He traveled through the wilderness, surviving on whatever resources he could find and living in an old bus that he had stumbled upon. Eventually, McCandless's journey came to an end in an old campsite in Alaska, where he died of starvation. Despite the tragedy of his story, McCandless's journey into the wild continues to inspire and intrigue people around the world.

analysis - Chris has been so close to us LITERALLY in California. Crazy to think as you travel you're able to meet new people as you go and chris has given us an example. once again he has left he has left his buddy Franz to continue the journey on his own with little supplies, hes CRAZY.

Anaylsis: Chris had the option to stay and work for a little more but he didn't want to ruin his journey. He was able to impact so many people for such a short amount of time and they all feel bothered cause of his death. I think this is a big goal for me as a person being able to impact a person and their life, This will let me know I have done my best to make that person know who I am as a person.

Gene tries his hardest, but sadly writes, "I learned that it is not possible for human beings as we know to live off the land" (p. 75) before plunging a knife through his heart when he realizes the true extent of his failure (p. 75).  Next up is crazy John Waterman.  Lots of similarities to Chris:  he's from the D.C. area, has MAJOR issues with his dad and is super smart.  John is an accomplish climber and alpinist (p. 79) before he starts losing his marbles, running for president of the United States on a platform to end hunger.  SPOILER ALERT:  He doesn't win the election!  Anywho, John comes unhinged, decides to climb the most difficult mountain in all of Alaska in the dead of winter and is never heard from again.  Alaska state troopers believe he probably fell down a crevasse (p. 80) to his death, although his remains were never found.  And last up is poor Carl McCunn.  Another transplant from the lower 48, Carl is the life of the party - just like Chris.  Good guy, fun to be around, charming, but lacks common sense & thinks someone will bail him out if he ends up in trouble.  Similar to Chris, he hatches a plan to go off into the wild for a few months BUT he fails to set up an Uber (think Uber plane!) to come back and pick him up.  The summer turns to fall and McCunn is starving and freezing.  But wait...a plane flies overhead and it looks like Carl is going to be rescued!!!  Unfortunately, Carl doesn't know that waving ONE hand in the air means you're good, no need to rescue you instead of throwing TWO hands in the air, the universal sign for HELP!!!  Carl is dying a slow and painful death by a mix of starvation and frostbite, so in his final diary (p. 81) he explains that he shot himself in the head to end his misery.  Guess Chris doesn't sound that crazy or unprepared after all, huh???

Analysis: The author shows us Chris isn't the only one to do this. People will follow their dream till death, they are that determined to accomplish their dream. I kinda would like to have motivation like theirs for my dreams. They both seem to have similar problems they are going through and decide to go to Alaska.

And yes, Nemo the fish we know today is named after that character, too!  While on a solo expedition in Utah, Ruess seemingly disappears, never to be heard from again.  A search party is sent to find him after he goes incommunicado (p. 93), but other than finding his donkey, some cave drawings/graffiti he made and pieces of his gear, Ruess was never seen again.  Stories vary on what happen to him - maybe he was a victim of his own reckless innocence (p, 97) and fell while hiking or possibly drown, but some speculate that he was murdered by Native Americans.  No one ever found him or his remains, so Everett's end remains a mystery.  Like Chris, Everett's passion for nature and adventure won out over a conventional life, yet neither man made it out of the wild.

Analysis: Another chapter about someone else doing almost the same as Chris. Maybe Chris inspired others to do as he did. Follow your dreams until the very end. although his body wasn't found he was beaten by nature just like Chris. Another sad story for these travelers.

Krakauer uses this chapter to illustrate the complexity of McCandless personality, as he meticulously planned his search(pg99) for freedom and self-discovery and the reasons behind his decision to discard his identity.

analysis: although Chris didn't want to be founded by his family members he made sure to leave some sort of clue just in case if anything went wrong. The big search of Chris was across the whole country because he had traveled everywhere making new friends that all cared about him. He was his own unique person that everyone loved.

He was a stubborn kid growing up he never liked people telling him what to do.  His sister Carine was like his best friend growing up, up untill he got out of junior high. They would hold hands walking back home until he got his friend brian. In high school Chris had no trouble when it came academically. he would get As with little effort. In high school Chris was able to get a job which was influenced from his parents that always hustled to make money(pg116) working at weird jobs. After his graduation that summer Chris took his chance to escape his family which influenced the journey to Alaska later on. 

analysis: Chris was a natural born talent, anything would come easy to him with little to no effort. But the only problem was he doesn't like people telling him what to do. I think its interesting that sometimes people with talent tend to let it go to waste or just don't care that they have talent but those who have no talent want to work the hardest out of everyone.

analysis: after reading chapter 13 this chapter made me think about Chris. If chris had his dog Buckley go with him on this adventure with him would the story be different? this chapter really shows a different point of view of how he felt before the journey.

analysis:  Both Chris and Krakauer are similar because they both want to find some sort of peace in there mind. They believe by going onto an adventure they are able to maybe find this peace and really have the feeling of being alive as a person. Someone with no regrets and filled with this warmth that they have done everything in their life.  

#twinss #alsakabuddys #offtothewild ]]> 2023-01-18 19:49:06 UTC https://padlet.com/dsainz1001_2/qpszwke2pngle8wx/wish/2448898946 dsainz1001_2 https://padlet.com/dsainz1001_2/qpszwke2pngle8wx/wish/2448901671 Summary: So Krakauer makes it back to his tent, all butt hurt that he didn't achieve his goal of summiting Devil's Thumb.  In a genius move, he decided to smoke a joint to make himself feel better since he's a bit depressed.  Well, he ends up setting his tent on fire causing it to vaporize one of the walls so the temperature inside drops by 30 degrees or so.  Good job, Jon!  Anyway, this causes him to think about his reason for running away to climb:  his volatile (p. 147) history with his father!  They have a very similar relationship to Walt and Chris - dad is stubborn, treats his son poorly, pushes him away with his medical school expectations (p. 148) since he himself is a doctor.  Yeah, I know: we've heard this story before.  Jon uses these complicated (p. 147) family memories as motivation:  he's going to attempt to summit the Thumb to prove his disbelieving dad wrong!  He fixes his tent by packing it with snow and forges a plan to begin his final ascent on a slightly "easier" side of the mountain, the southeast side.  At sunrise, he summons ALL of his courage and overcoming all of the terrifying (p. 150) obstacles, he finally makes it to the top - YAY!  He enjoys the view for a minutes, snaps a few pics, and begins his descent.  When he finally makes it off the mountain, he tells a few people what he did.  They aren't extremely impressed.  This makes Jon think about what he did and why he did it, causing him to say, "I thought climbing Devil's Thumb would fix all that was wrong with my life.  In the end, of course, it changed almost nothing.  But I came to appreciate that mountains make poor receptacles for dreams. And I lived to tell my tale" (p. 155). Years later when writing this book, he realizes that his hubris (p.155) pushed him to his limits to achieve his goal, but that the impact his possible death had on those who loved him would've been catastrophic.  This is why he believes that Chris had NO intention to die in the wild, that he was only chasing his young, irresponsible dream

analysis:  In this chapter, I find it crazy that some people actually think this way. That being out in the wild and being alone without your family just makes you feel less like a person. Not being able to have people care about you or feel their warmth. It could be part of your bucket list to be out in the wild but this can come to be so dangerous and some times not being worth having to go through such pain on your own.

summary: In this chapter Chris continues his journey in the wilderness, and reflects on how alone he is and how much he misses society. being alone can also cause you to think different of yourself. He starts to think how much he has changed since he left society, and how much he has learned. He begins to feel like he is a part of nature, and that nature is a part of him.

analysis: chris shows us how he was able to take pictures of his journey. He's been traveling for this far and the only way he can express himself to others in the future is by taking pictures of the places he has been.  Hes also learned to live in the wild by adapting to his surroundings.

analysis: I think Chris died from starvation because of the potato could of just made him really sick and weak. The lack of food just made it worse for his body to go through.

analysis: after all McCandless has passed away in the bus. His parents must have seen this coming already since he has been missing in their eyes for 3 years. He hasn't seen any of his family members in so long his family had already been worried for a long time. I believe he had the time of his life traveling around the US but maybe he could of had a better time traveling with at least one family member to create memories.

I believe I have the better dream then them. As a kid I have always dreamed of becoming a professional soccer player. I would watch my older brother's soccer games online when he played on the Mexican national team for the U-22s In other countries. This always brings me joy and determination to becoming a great player in the future. I've been playing the sport since I was 4 years old, I loved everything about it from having to travel far to having to walk to my games. So far I've played for some high level teams in the country and have received my first pro contract to play in a team in Mexico. This is a big decision in my life that I will have to make as a young adult. I will have many failures in my soccer career but I will always find the motivation to get back up and keep going at my dream. This sport brings the most joy to my life!!

Personally I thought Chris was fully committed to his goal, their was times Chris could have had the upper hand with materials and tools that could have helped him against nature. At times I did find the book confusing because it didn't make sense to me why Chris wouldn't take the help he was offered survive or have a better chance of surviving. although he didn't wanna take much help there was times where he had to put his journey on pause to cooperate himself or his resources that he had ran out. He did have a job to make some money for a couple of months, but was still very determined to finish his journey to Alaska. I can't see myself leaving the for 3 years without anyone knowing where I am at. I'll eventually end up going crazy not knowing how my family is doing when putting yourself in that situation of separation.
