For this project, students will create a black and white T-shirt design that creates awareness about a social justice topic of their choosing. They may sketch their idea on paper, but the final design will be produced through Adobe Illustrator. Once those are completed, we will be making the T-shirts with fabric paint and an iron-on stencil from freezer paper. The website below acts as a step-by-step guide for how to carry out the process once the final design is completed. In this lesson, we will also go over copyright, and what it means to create a design of your own.

students will be asked to research and discover environmental issues that affect our local area. Once a problem has been identified, students can work in groups or individually to come up with questions around their topic. Their art project will involve expressing one way the answer to their problem can be solved. One requirement the project will have is that at least ONE element of their artwork needs to be from recycled, or repurposed material. The work can be in any medium, including all 2D and 3D materials. the following example below is a picture. The example below shows the work of two artists that form "trash" into shapes that create amazing shadow figures!

The students will be given a writing prompt to describe what they would want to get as a tattoo. They would need to list a minimum of 5 important characteristics they would want to include (such as style or color), and describe any text or image they have in mind. The prompts would be handed out and redistributed among the students, and they will be assigned to create that tattoo for their client. They will have opportunities to show their progress work to their "client" and work with them to create the image they would want. The final product they will hand in will be the final image that the client is happy with. If time and budget allows, I could make fun temporary tattoos out of the designs from the website below. If the students do not feel comfortable having a temporary tattoo, they will not be required to apply it for a grade.
