Kindness is free, even if they do not offer it to you. If you feel you can't them to your fullest, which is always a possibility, you help them in other ways or find someone, like a manager, who can. Even in those moments, always offer understanding and kindness. A little goes a long way, especially when you don't know what that customer may be dealing with outside of the store. Also, always try and remember regulars and the certain care they want to have taken with their groceries.

My department is by the front door, so I often see customers as they first enter the store from the parking lot while I'm watering. Whenever possible, I make eye contact with them, smile genuinely, and welcome them into the store. I love the way customers' faces light up at the greeting and many stop to comment on what I'm watering. It's a great way to establish rapport, greet the customer and start them shopping with a pleasant experience.

Like Ryan said, it's about showing up for your customers, being your best at what you do and going above and beyond. You never know what anyone is ever going through. A simple smile, how are you, anything I can help you with; is sometimes all they need to hear. I had a customer one time come to guest services returning an item. He was being very short, upset, started complaining to me and I simply said to him with a smile, "I understand sir and I am so sorry about this, let me take care of this for you and get this corrected." Then followed with a, " are you doing ok today sir? How is your afternoon going?" That there made him look up, look at me, caught him off guard, and simply say, "actually having a very bad day, I am sorry for how I am acting." He continued to tell me about his day and thanked me at the end for making his day better by simply being kind and asking.
