Mrs. Mallard struggles with an internal conflict of being distraught over her husband’s death, like society would expect, and the feeling of realization at the fact that she can now live a free life without anyone controlling her. This affects her as she resolves her conflict, moving on from Mr. Mallard’s passing and embracing all the possibilities of her new life. This is significant to the passage as it is the main conflict that drives the entire story.

The ending of the "Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin is an appropriate ending because the moment Mrs. Mallard believed she was a free woman from her husband's prison he appeared in front of her eyes. Furthermore, the ending is appropriate because it showed the distress, she felt from imagining going back into her captivity and having to act like she was happily married. Additionally, this ending is appropriate because as readers if we would go through a situation like this, we would most likely react like Mrs. Mallard did and die from this traumatic experience. Therefore, the ending for a "Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin is appropriate because in the end the freedom that Mrs. Mallard wanted to achieve was only attained by her dying.
