Chinese New Year is a family reunion time to celebrate the new year. It is also a time to remember the myth Nian the monster they sent away back to sea or to the mountains. He had the body of a bull and head of a lion. In the myth every year at the beginning of Chinese New Year, Nian comes out of hiding. it comes out to eat. During winter there was very little food so he would go to the village. He would eat the crops and the villagers. Nian was afraid of loud noises loud noises, fire, and the colour red.The Chinese thought he was mean and furosious. The Chinese have mini parties that friend's and family are invited to.

Chinese New Year also celebrates when the rice farmers planted their rice. The time they waited for the crops to grow developed into
Chinese New Year. Lots of ancient customs are still celebrated today.
