William Turner: created and organized guidelines for the Continuing Education Unit CEU. This unit focused on life-long learning and motivating adults to use all available resources.
Paulo Freire: believed that learning begins with the individual and wrote "Pedagogy of the Oppressed". It postulated that adults can learn individually through a process called "transformative learning".
Allen Tough: began studying "self-directed learning" with tasks and projects. Discovered that adults spend a lot of time planning and designing their learning.
Robert Havighurst: founded the Developmental Task Theory that postulates that learning is a basic function and is never-ending. He believed that learning is part biology, part psychology, and part sociology.
Cyril O'Houle: mentored Malcolm Knowles and studied motivation in adult education. He postulated a theory of successful adult learners that states that adults are oriented by goals, activities, and their own learning.
Malcolm Knowles: is the father of Andragogy. Expanded other's works and elaborated six assumptions: self-concept maturity helps people be self-directed, experience is a resource for learning, readiness to learn social roles, problem-centered learning for immediate application, adults' motivation is internal, and adults have a personal reason for learning.
