Esperanza continuously experiences situations that are not altogheter very pleasant. However, these are precisely the ones where we can get used to the idea that life is not always going to give us good times. It is when we feel at our lowest point that we reflect on our own nuances, and begin to grow and have a more open perspective on how the world works.

We can say that the context in which you are now (being a teenager at school) greatly influences the way you behave towards others. Well, clearly you want to have a good impression towards others. In this case, Esperanza could have felt very embarrassed by the fact that she could not avoid crying in public, especially if she is surrounded by boys her own age where "reputation is everything". Esperanza goes through physical changes, in this case, she is temporarily weak. Many teens feel that their appearance is ungainly or do not yet accept aspects of themselves. For Esperanza, her "weakness" is not pleasant. However, as the second quote reflects, other aspects of one's personality are more positive than others. Esperanza prides herself on being responsible and diligent enough to make her own lunch. Plus, that's a valuable skill to have as an adult.
