We have risen as a community by continuing to bring quality instruction to our students. We have used technology in a way never imagined before the pandemic. We have challenged ourselves to hone our craft and push ourselves in a short amount of time. Additionally, we have strengthened relationships , and gained a new found mutual respect between educators and families. We have overcome many obstacles and did not allow ourselves to be defeated. We have all persevered and are the better for it.

We have risen as a community in so many different ways. We have become a stronger community and are all helping each other each and every step of the way. The relationships we have are now stronger than ever with not only staff members, but with the parents and children as well. We have exceeded the expectations of us in many different ways. This could have broken us all, but it actually made us stronger!

As a school community we have risen to the challenges set before us in many ways over the past few months. The courage and strength displayed by the staff, students and parents cannot be measured. We were able to come together, learn and persevere through one of the most difficult times in history. We have also had to step out of our comfort zones in so many cases, especially where technology is concerned. As we continue our remote learning journeys, we are continuing to develop new tools and strategies in order to reach our students and provide them with quality instruction. P.S. 315 continues to be the place "Where it's cool to be smart and it's cool to care"!

As a community we have risen to the challenge! We have done and continue to do extensive outreach to the parents and students keeping them abreast of what needs to be accomplished in order to continue their learning and success....What I have learned from this remote learning experience is that our children need an abundance of practice with regard to working independently. This experience solidified for me that our students struggle when it comes to completing tasks independently. We, no doubt, value and understand the importance of collaboration and collaboration will undoubtedly continue to be a component of effective teaching, however, we MUST now being to foster the development of independence, pride and ownership over their OWN work.

Our community has risen to the challenge during remote learning in so many ways . We came together as a school community and embarked upon an entirely new learning platform. As educators, we are helping each other daily, sharing best practices. We are all learning about ourselves during this pandemic. We are learning to further educate the “whole child” putting a strong focus on their social emotional needs. In my own life. I am learning how to stay connected to my students and give them the most stability I am able to, from home. Although I haven’t an idea what our “classrooms” will look like in September, I continue to remain hopeful that we will have some form of normalcy for ourselves and for our school community, as well as around the world.

With a collaborative effort from all parties involved, an online platform was created in a matter of days to transform classroom from brick and mortar classroom to an online one. By doing so, children are kept receiving their valuable education; and faculty, parents, and children are kept safe by doing e-learning. Moving an ordinary way of education to a completely different platform is an extraordinary endeavor and it was well accomplished. Therefore, I would say the community of educators has come together to make this change a reality in a very short time.

What have we learned from this experience?”

I have learned the following:

· How to use various online educational tools.

· How to use various meetings platforms.

· How to perform my job efficiently while telecommuting.

· How to collaborate with my colleagues from a distance.

We were faced with new ways of teaching and new ways of supporting our students, their families, and each other.
As a school community, it is amazing how we have come together in a world crisis with such a short amount of time to educate our children. There are many lessons to learn from this situation. I personally learned how I need my students as much as they need me. I learned that through remote learning, there are so many tools that can be used to reach our children in the future. I learned that I work with amazing dedicated teachers who go above and beyond the call of duty.

We as a community have risen to this challenge together by responding to almost unprecedented times within a few days as we attended workshops, contacted parents and helped each other. We have shared educational materials and reached out to each other outside of word hours. To assure that our students had access to technology and that their parents knew how to help them, we stayed on the phone for hours assisting parents on how to get/use devices, join virtual meetings and access assignments. I have never spoken to so many parents regularly as I have since remote learning began. I have learned that we should never take educating children within a classroom for granted.

I know I am greatful for my 3rd grade family of wonderful ladies and fabulous teachers that are so wise and knowledgeable and supportive and worked hand in hand so beautifully included in that family are Mrs. D. Fandacone, Mrs. C. Valic for their patience and support that is beyond angelic with the ability to take me to cyber places I never thought I could go, and Mrs. M. Khan for her support in helping to support our ENL students. Without them I could not have come through this with my hair still on my head. I know I could not have done any of this without Mrs. Collazo and Mrs. king calling students 3 times a day. I would like to thank D'Ana and Ellen form making deadlines and paperwork easy for even a computer illiterate as myself get things in on time with their helpful reminders and of course Mrs. Quartana, Mrs. Ellman and Mrs. Graves for supplying supporting resources to keep me going. I have come very far, but I believe it is on the shoulders of some very wonderful people. Thank you all so very much but gotta say my own children were a big help whenever I was ready smash my computer.

No one knew what was coming but we worked tirelessly with our students, parents and fellow teachers to get the job done, i love our team and I'm thankful.

We have strengthen the family connection and home support as well as the support amongst our staff. We've also supported our students and families emotionally which was causing a blockage for most of our students from entering the virtual classrooms. Besides learning new technology platforms and how to incorporate it into our virtual classrooms, we've learned about ourselves. Who we are as educators. We've learned a new kind of patience. We've learned how to be supportive, and flexible. But most importantly, we learned perseverance.

We have risen to an unexpected challenge with our colleagues. We have been tasked with the "impossible" and succeeded beyond our wildest dreams. We have been emotionally and academically supporting our students and their families through uncertain and scary times when our support was an anchor for some of them. We have extended our therapeutic services to beyond the individual to a family approach. My speech colleagues as well as the teachers are an outstanding resource for me and have helped me through this process, touching my students lives as well. Hoping to see everyone soon!!

As a community we have risen to this challenge by being a support system for each other. We automatically banded together as family and worked with each other as we transitioned to remote learning. In addition, to helping one another, we provided support to our students and their families who also had to transition to remote learning. We have learned that we can overcome challenges by working together as a team.

A lot has been thrown our way from all directions and it has been an emotional stretch but we have persevered with resilience despite not having a moment to exhale. As we continue through this maze of "new normal," I know that we are in a period of transition. As I told my students recently, "with great pain, comes great change," and I believe that it will be for the better. I am optimistic that all that we have endured will continue to strengthen us, enlighten us and help us to move forward and continue to provide "hope" for our children of tomorrow.

Our community has risen to these unforeseeable challenges far better than anyone could have every anticipated! Despite the unchartered waters we have all been forced to navigate, the bonds between our home and school have strengthened beyond measure. As we go into the homes of our students and share with them our collective fears, concerns, joys and sorrows, we've reached a new level of personal commitment to truly see each other as individuals and strive to best assist each. The academic and emotional support we give to each other has truly helped to manage the social isolation everyone feels. I've learned the importance of having and sharing a sense of humor with my families. It's said laughter is the best medicine, and during this time when we are all isolated and depression is commonplace, it's important to stress that this is temporary and better times are coming. I personally have become very good friends with "Youtube" and "Google" and always happily report my findings to my families as I log in with them. Often times we have been able to solve our tech issues by working together. Teamwork and gratitude have been important keys to our success. It is with a renewed sense of gratitude that I approach each day now. I am grateful for the continued good health of everyone I love and am especially grateful for my PS 315 school/community family.

I truly miss our school and students and can’t wait for the day that we can go back and be all together again as a community.

Aphrodite Pantelidis

Even online, I felt welcomed by everyone, and I could reach out for help when needed. The way this community came together within a matter of days to do something that has never been done before is truly remarkable, and I feel lucky to have been apart of this process. Although our country seems upside down at the moment, what rings through is how important education is, and taking care of the future of this country.

Our community rose to this challenge by working together in so many ways. I believe that the key to being successful during difficult and uncertain times is coming together with others to figure out a solution to the problem. During this time we began by initially gathering in the school (social distancing of course) while the children were safe at home to come up with a plan, gather necessary resources, contact families, make preparations, and so much more. We then worked from home to further plan, research, and come up with ideas. In addition, we worked to get our students the supports they needed whether it was wifi, devices, provide technical support, meals, and/or packets of work. In addition, we collaborated with various other staff members to support students, contact families, discuss goals, conduct meetings, and so much more. All of these elements have allowed us to rise to this great challenge together. I think we have learned the importance of perseverance and dedication to the education field and to our students. The passion that educators and other staff members working within the Department of Education have for their students and their success and wellbeing is key. This is something that we have always had, but in this experience it has really been brought to light and exemplified.

I have learned how important it is for students to be taught in person. Students need to be in a school building since there is more routine and more personal interactions with their classmates and more involvement in their classwork compared to the students doing their classes online. It has been challenging but my class team and I did contact our families often to get them involved in the online class or gave the parents flexibility in handing in the assignments, and having online meetings with the kids. It was tough for our working families especially those who are essential workers and for families who aren't fluent in English.

Technology was a word that always made me want to hide. Hide from the unknown because it seemed too big to accomplish. Then I realized that our students and many family members felt the same way. I learned the meaning of compassion. So how do you accomplish this huge monster like challenge? Together as a P.S. 315 Family, that's how. One phone call at a time. Teacher's calling teacher's to guide them through! (Like the way we guide our students to new challenging assignments.) Parent's calling teachers because they do not want their children to fall behind. Even when life seemed to flip upside down, parents worry about their child's future. That is true love! We laughed, we cried, we typed, we explored and we conquered. Together the administration, teachers, parents, and children didn't give up. We tried, we failed, we made mistakes and we learned. This remote learning is a symbol of what education should be. It taught us that when you have a goal in mind, a community working together, mixed with love that MIRACLES can happen. I can say that I no longer hide from this thing called technology(still cringe a bit) but instead build on what I learned to learn more and be successful. My little kiddos and their amazing parents have helped me to help them. What do we get in return? Our Future, our kids knowing they can succeed at anything and will never stop learning. Now if that is not education, then I don't know what is! Thank you P.S. 315

This is a time in our history that will not be forgotten. It is a time that our students and our children will tell their children about. It is a time that we, as elderly people, will recall and discuss with our grandchildren. It is a time to feel very PROUD of our accomplishments. As a school community and even further, as a global community, we came together to provide education, support, guidance, strength, assistance, comfort, and love to our community. As a school community, we did this from our homes. We brought our homes into the homes of our students and vice versa. Educators, as heroes, were part of the glue that helped keep the P.S. 315 school families together. To the best of our ability, each of us has stretched and grown in ways we would not have imagined. This was brought upon us so quickly, but collectively we built upon each other’s strengths and truly rose to the occasion. What a wonderful example this is for our students and the global community! There are many lessons learned throughout this time, but the one take away is that together, even while apart, we are stronger. We were charged with a tremendous job to do. We rose to the occasion like never seen before and I truly think we will come out of it on the other side collectively stronger.

PS 315 is an incredibly unique learning community. The collaborative spirit that exits among the staff cannot be underestimated. When we were notified in mid-march that we would be transitioning to remote learning and would be partaking in a three day professional learning to learn the Google Classroom platform , although a little frightened at the prospect of this new learning, the grade level cohorts came together to embrace and collaborate in the formation of their remote learning classrooms. The staff assisted one another to help in the setup of the Google Classrooms, learn the platform logistics, and build upon their technological know-how. They researched resources and learned how to deliver this type of instruction to their students. They successfully put together the PS 315K Remote Learning School and the students began their remote instruction. All stakeholders were involved in engaging the students through home contact to make sure students were safe and engaged in learning. As remote learning progressed, the teachers and paraprofessionals grew in their pedagogical expertise and began to incorporate more live instruction as they realized how important this was to their students and their learning. The challenges of working from home with their own families did not deter them from their ability to bring the best of themselves to our students. I am extremely proud of my staff and the work they are doing during to allow our students to grow in knowledge and be the best they can be. We have grown immensely in our technology expertise and are ready to incorporate this knowledge into whatever path this remote learning journey leads us. I am honored to be the principal of such a dedicated staff whose purpose is to prepare our students to become the leaders of tomorrow! Their hard work and dedication to the students of PS 315 does not go unnoticed!

At times placing a demand on every fiber of our being. However, we dug way down and gave birth to an intoxicating level of passion, drive and a community spirit that was relentless. We put the T in TENACITY and refused to lose or become stagnant. We as a TEAM were a text, a dojo, a googleclassroom, a googlemeet, a zoom,or a call away! The UNITY of our community was and continues to be simply amazing! Despite all of this, there is still a need for support and training for all staff as we move forward. We will face and overcome these next set of hurdles without fear. Fear is not allowed because as a collective we have conquered the beast of technological ignorance. We will now work to fortify our weakest links to ensure our progress and success.

WITHOUT STRUGGLE THERE IS NO PROGRESS!
