"But the role of the tractor began to change with the advent of the gasoline engine in the late 1800's."

I chose this quote because although the tractor changed farming at the time it did not stop there but continued to change. New ways of using a tractor were invented such as using a gasoline engine. One article I found stated that because the combustion engine became adapted to diesel fuel, tractors could do more work than any human, animal, or steam engine (Childress, 2018). This was a huge change in the agricultural industry. Without the invention of the tractor and the improvements made to it years later farming would be much different and require a lot more physical labor.
Technology - the Extension…

"The tractor was probably the most significant agricultural innovation of the twentieth century."

I chose this quote because the tractor completely changed the way farming was done. Farming used to require a lot of man and animal labor until this invention. One article stated that in 1920 there were 26 million horses on farms and only about 3 million by the year 1960 (Manuelli, Seshardi, 2014). With the invention of the tractor less labor from farm workers. The article also stated that in 1910 there were 11.67 million farm workers and only 5.97 million by the year 1960 (Manuelli, Seshardi, 2014). With that said, the invention of the tractor completely changed farming.
Frictionless Technology Diffusion…

"In the decades that followed the introduction of inexpensive fertilizers yields tripled."

Every year the population keeps on growing. With that said, because there are more and more people every year then our fields should get the most crops out of the fields as possible. The reason I chose this quote is because fertilizer was one of the main reasons why farmers are able to produce as much food as they do. An article I found explained that from the period of 1949 to 1964, 39 states found that fertilizers are the best land substitutable production factors (Brunelle, 2015). Since the world is always growing it is good that we have technologies like fertilizers that will give us higher crop yields.
Evaluating the Impact of Rising Fertilizer…

"But fertilizer wasn't the only reason for higher yields. Seeds changed."

That is a true statement. Even though fertilizer has been proven to bring higher crop yields, seed hybrids were introduced. I chose this quote because the changing of seeds was another important technology that changed farming. An article I found that high yielding hybrid maize can increase incomes and cause a reduction of poverty because of the extra additional maize sales (Smale, Mason, 2014). This article gives insight into the beneficial outcomes of using hybrid seeds. Since there will be more crops grown from the fields there will be more food to feed people.
Hybrid Seed and the Economic…

I chose this quote because of how hybrid seeds have been proven to produce higher yields over the years. Populations keep growing therefore it is good that society keeps on finding ways to produce more crops to feed more people. One article mentioned that there has been a steady increase in yields in the past sixty years because of investing in genetic crop improvement (Cassman, 2016). With that said I do not believe farmers would have been able to produce as much crops as they do now without the use of seed hybrids. Without the continuous change and introductions of farming technology, farming would not be where it is at today.
Long-Term Trajectories: Crop Yields…
