We see Meursault struggling to wake up in the morning from the beginning of Chapter 6 because he has a "hard time waking up on Sunday," (47), and Marie had to "call and shake" him. We know he doesn't like Sundays because he said in previous chapters, "I don't like Sundays." (21.) Given the circumstances of Sunday, the result is that it causes Meursault to experience pressure and discomfort, causing his body to react differently.

Whilst journeying to Masson, they notice a group of Arabs staring at them, Raymond's brother-in-law amongst the few. As they were on the beach, Raymond, Masson, and Meursault noticed two Arabs following them and because of this, a fight breaks out. During the fight, one of the Arabs pulled out a knife and stabbed Raymond, "I shouted, 'Look out he's got a knife...' Raymond's arm had already been cut open and mouth slashed (54)." Meursault reaction to shooting the Arab might've been a stressor that led to it because of what happened to Raymond and he felt threatened by the Arab because they caused harm to Raymond.

Trigger 1: The Sun

Later in the chapter, nature becomes a detrimental element of Meursault. He is ridiculed by the hot sun, just as it was when his mother died. He compares his emotional detachment at his mother's funeral to his emotional detachment now, "The sun was the same as it had been the day I'd buried Maman, and like then, my forehead, especially was hurting me, all the veins in it throbbing under the skin.”(58). As a result of the comparison, he finds himself trapped in the situation with the Arab. The heat prompts and triggers Meursault, who is normally a neutral observer, to take action and fire.

Amoral

Meursault can be characterized as amoral because of this lack of understanding between what is moral and what is not. There has been stressors and triggers that had contributed to him shooting the Arab. Not only did he not like Sundays because it made him uncomfortable and he felt pressure and discomfort because of it but also the stabbing of Raymond made him feel threatened and caused him to act in self defense. Another cause is because of the Sun of the beach. The Sun on the beach triggered him because it reminded him of the Sun during his mother's funeral, which caused him to be triggered emotional because he was reminded of what his version of traumatic experience. He does not know the different between what is morally accurate and what is not, and because of this is why he is deemed amoral.
