Knights were vicious soldiers who fought on horseback. Knights defended their nobles land. The equiptment was expensive so only a few people had money for weapons and such. As a result, the lords gave fiefs(pieces of land) to the knights for their service. A knight who promised to support a lord was called a vassal. The knight would remain loyal in exchange for the lords land...historians called the system of promises, feudalism.
