The old world gave to the new world amazing things such as livestock and grapes. However, they did also bring terrible diseases such as smallpox and malaria. Many people participated in the Age of Exploration because they were following stories of riches and gold. Of course the missionaries also wanted to explore so that they could spread their religion of Christianity. There were also those people who wanted to discover something big that would make them famous. This led people to explore the land in Europe. The time of exploration led to a lot more diversity and interesting discoveries.

Probably one of the most important reasons was to escape religious persecution. For example, the famous Pilgrims that sailed to North America on the Mayflower were seeking dependence from the church of England, as were the Puritans who followed 10 years later. There were also people that were in tough spots such as those in debtors prison or people who needed recourses that England were beginning to lack. There were also those that came to America by force. Yup, slaves were also taken in to the unknown to serve white settlers. They realized that if when they arrived if they decided just to go at it "every man for himself" style, survival would be much harder than if they worked together for the greater good. This led to the idea of establishing the Mayflower compact. It contained a lot of religious statements seeing as the reason the Pilgrims left England was so that they could escape persecution. The mayflower compact also stated the Pilgrims would help each other out and contribute to their community and not just themselves. The Mayflower Compact helped the pilgrims make a more well-run community.

This meant that most of the colonies elected their own rulers, instead of being under the governing of the king of England. However, the King maintained some power over the colonies through charters. A charter is a document the king issues that gives him some control over the colonies. However, these charters did not make a huge difference in he lives of the people living in the colonies. for the most part, they all did their own thing. Self-government in the colonies was not during just the time of the pilgrims. it was present in the colonies throughout the American Revolution as well. After more colonists came, and the colonies were formed, there were African American slaves, and also indentured servants, who would act as slaves, only, after a few years of working, they would be granted freedom along with land, money, and seeds. However, this eventually became inconvenient for the colonies (Particularly in Virginia, where they had large tobacco fields that required many hands) and even though indentured servants were cheaper than slaves, eventually, slavery was seen all throughout the colonies. It was very unfair that the African Americans were treaded as lesser men just because of the color of their skin.
