The cultural revolution was something that was launched by Mao Zedong which wanted to create a new society in China. In this new society, everyone would follow Mao's ideas and work for the better or good. However, just like the other program "The Great Leap Forward", this idea was also a disaster. Many people that were not being loyal to Mao were sent to prison. Schools were closed for student to join which meant that they were getting a brain drain because people are not being educated. Also, Factories and farm production was reduced because there were not enough workers, which meant that there were less foods and products.

When Mao died new leaders came along but they dd not think like Mao. They wanted to open China to the rest of the world for trade. They wanted to start businesses with other foreigners, create jobs and trade technologies or products. However, foreigners did not want to come to China if the government was going to control their jobs, they wanted to be free.

SEZ stands for special economic zones. These SEZs were the solution with the problem with foreigners with trade. They are special areas where the businesses in the area choose what to produce and for what price. Most of the goods are exports to other countries.

Pros/Cons of SEZs

Some pros were that shenzhen had only 20,000 people before, now it has 7 million people because of traded and SEZs. Also, new jobs have opened up and workers are gaining more money that could help support them. Some cons were that the places with SEZs became rich but a lot of place are still poor which makes a huge gap between rich and poor. Also, another problem is that since the population is becoming bigger in SEZs and the jobs are getting full, some people can't get jobs. However, some turn into crime.
