As Mr. Utterson is talking to Mr. Hyde about their common friend Dr. Jekyll, Hyde does not agree that Jekyll is friends with Utterson as "..with a flush of anger. 'I do not think yo would have lied' ". Stevenson presents Hyde as territorial as he does not like the idea of Jekyll having friends with people whom he is not aware of. This presents Hyde as a frightened outsider since he does not know the connections in the city. Since he may be using Jekyll for his money, not being in the loop of who know who, makes Hyde's plan harder than he imagined.

Even though he was rude and snarky towards Mr. Utterson, he was just a plain and short man. "He was small and very plainly
dressed, and the look of him, even at that distance, went somehow strongly against the watcher’s inclination. But he made straight for the door, crossing the roadway to save time; and as he came, he drew a key from his pocket like one approaching home." As Mr. Utterson finishes his conversation with Mr. Hyde, he notes that there is something notably sinister about this man. He further describes him as "pale and dwarfish" has a "displeasing smile", and a timid yet very bold personality.

"He never told you," cried Mr. Hyde, with a flush of anger. " I did not think you would have lied." This line of dialogue from Mr. Hyde shows how fast he is to accuse one of lying, which ties into the aspect of him being rude and capable of doing rude/evil things so willy-nilly. The line also portrays Hyde's relationship with Jekyll and how Hyde thinks that the two are extremely close and know each other so well that he is able to confidently accuse Utterson of lying. The relationship/Hyde is borderline territorial and possessive.

-Cathy Nguyen

But his fear was only momentary; and though he did not look the lawyer in the face, he answered coolly enough..."
This action reveals his thoughts and how, deep down, he is scared of interaction and confrontation. However, he's trained himself to put on a cool front so as to portray himself as a confident person with no sort of secret to hide. This short display of fear shows Hyde's uneasiness and his anxiety of being found out, not for his numerous evil deeds, but his secret dual identity.

-Cathy Nguyen

When Enfield is telling Utterson about the little girl incident and Utterson asks Enfield what Hyde looks like, Enfield describes Hyde as "displeasing", "deformed", and "downright detestable." From the way Enfield describes him, it is obvious that Enfield does not like Hyde and gets a bad vibe from him. Although he cannot pinpoint anything ugly/out of the ordinary specifically, Enfield simply feels that there is something wrong with his appearance and that he dislikes Hyde, which ties into the idea that an ugly and detestable appearance is directly related to an ugly and detestable personality.

-Cathy Nguyen

When he is discovered and publicly shunned, he shows no sign of remorse or regret. These actions portray how Hyde is naturally evil, since the incident happened at 3 am when nobody was expected to see it, and yet he still committed the evil deed anyway. His coolness and lack of resistance to the angry mob of adults/parents also show how these evil deeds are a norm to Hyde and that he is used to being hated for being evil.

-Cathy Nguyen
