The puritans belived that you were either predestined to be saved or damned to an eternity of suffering. They thought that Stan worked among them and recruited witches and wizards. They lived in a theocracy which blended church and government. The church had more power than the government. They outlawed witchcraft which was against there religion.

A group of girls were said to be possessed by witches throughout their society. These girls accused over 100 people of being witches. In trial, when the accused would plead innocent, the girls would scream, faint, and claim to feel pain. This was enough evidence for the court to convict them. The act these girls put on was eventually proven fake as the accusations became more bizarre.

There were many ways to prove a person to be a witch. They often put the accused in the water and waited to see if they would sink or float. If the accused floated then they were a witch, if they sunk they were not. They would also look for a "witches teat". This was a marking on the body which proved the accused was a witch.
