I was really inspired to study public health after working in the healthcare setting as an ophthalmic assistant and through my own experiences as somebody who has a chronic illness. While working in healthcare it was hard to ignore the health disparities caused by socioeconomic factors and I could not help but notice how many patients from disadvantaged backgrounds had more difficulty accessing healthcare (because of economic or social reasons) and as a result more fragmented care and worse outcomes. As a patient myself I have personally experienced how difficult the healthcare system can be to navigate, so it is easy for me to see how that would be even more difficult for others who have faced more challenging life situations.
