I had a close friend die in a tractor rollover farm accident. I will never forget him or how critical farm injury prevention is in saving lives and preventing injury! Debbie

Every culture has numerous differences in lifestyle and health practices. Working to ease the clash between American culture and immigrant cultures, specifically around health, is work that has challenged and intrigued me. I continue to work part-time as a health care interpreter, and I find that regular interactions with immigrant patients and their families help me stay connected to what is important to me and why I want to work in public health at the population level.

Hi! I'm Sam Pabich, and I am an endocrinology fellow at UW Hospital. I've always been interested in public health. Many of the health problems I deal with in practice are related to obesity. I see so many people who have had bad health consequences from obesity, and I really feel a responsibility to intervene on this problem in a primary way--preventing these diseases before people need to see me!

I have spent a number of years conducting basic research in vector biology and infectious diseases, both internationally and domestically. But I was frustrated because my work did not imminently and meaningfully impact human health, and I could not overlook the disparities we face domestically - right here in our own communities. My deepest desire and passion is to redefine patient experiences and to effect change in our domestic healthcare system. I ultimately settled on approaching this complex issue from an overarching health policy and health law perspective. During my MPH, I will dedicate myself to patient legal advocacy through the UW Center for Patient Partnerships, where patient experiences ultimately translate into meaningful policy changes. In my career, I ultimately want to be at the forefront of state and national healthcare reform to expand access to care and to do so in a manner that is thoroughly evidence-based, comprehensive, and equitable.

I spent my undergrad at UW Madison and volunteering at a nearby clinic really opened by eyes to the importance of public health my sophomore year. I haven't narrowed down my interests yet. I am passionate about women's health as I have had friends and witnessed patients who have experienced many hardships that are out of their control. I find the opioid epidemic as an issue that the healthcare industry should take a large portion of responsibility for. Addressing this and finding ways to end it would be amazing to be a part of. I also have seen what the clinic I volunteered at does to combat the lack of access, equity, and patient advocacy in the Madison community. Being able to witness these experiences firsthand has brought to light all of the different aspects that affect the healthcare a patient receives. Sorry for the long-winded response! I appreciate anyone who makes it til the end!

My topical interests include maternal/child heath, women's health, and teen health. I'm passionate about working with the disenfranchised and marginalized in urban settings. And as an immigrant kid myself, I feel an especially strong connection to immigrant/refugee populations.

Hi All, my name is Jordan and my previous post didn't all come through. I'm an exclusive MPH student. I'm very interested in all things that encompass population -based nutrition. I'm inspired to learn from populations disproportionally affected by poverty, health determinants and even zip code. I hope to learn about this topic and many more!

Healthcare Access and Affordability

Hi everyone, my name is Kelsey Melah and I am an MPAS/MPH dual degree student. I was really inspired to study public health after working in the healthcare setting as an ophthalmic assistant and through my own experiences as somebody who has a chronic illness. While working in healthcare it was hard to ignore the health disparities caused by socioeconomic factors and I could not help but notice how many patients from disadvantaged backgrounds had more difficulty accessing healthcare (because of economic or social reasons) and as a result more fragmented care and worse outcomes. As a patient myself I have personally experienced how difficult the healthcare system can be to navigate, so it is easy for me to see how that would be even more difficult for others who have faced more challenging life situations. With my MPH I hope to work to make the system more manageable for patients while working to reduce costs and improve care for those who need it the most.
