As a non-Native, I try to branch out from traditional designs and geometry in my work to show appreciation for the art form while also not appropriating ideas. I think beading is a great way to improve cross-cultural understanding, as Europeans first brought glass beads to Turtle Island in the 1700s, and Indigenous people turned them into pieces of wonder and beauty. Everyone has something to contribute if we can keep an open mind and a caring heart.
