Being able to fly through the air is something that people had never been able to do before and it was very exciting. The other big thing was that in 1920, the English air force auctioned off their planes from the war that they didn't need anymore (around 10,000 planes and 30,000 engines) which made them a lot more popular for everyday use. At first, pilots from the war would fly people around personally for a fee. Then, in 1927 the first airport terminal came around which made it more available for travel needs. Then, because of Charles A. Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic Ocean to Paris in 1927, he started pushing for more flights across the world. Airplanes are the fastest way to travel long distances, especially across oceans. Airplane shows also became a source of entertainment for many people back then, and they're still around and fairly popular today. When they were first used as commercial airplanes, few people were brave enough to travel on them, unlike today when nearly everyone in America has ridden a plane before when they've had to travel long distances. Lindbergh Jr, made the first solo flight from New York city to Paris in 1927 which he and the airplane got a lot of attention for. Then, 5 years later, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to make that flight. Today, Chuck Yeager who is still alive is a very important person in the world of airplanes. Although this happened nearly 60 years ago, he was the first person to travel faster than the speed of sound! These examples and others from current day and the past were so well known because they were the first to do something with planes. Today, airports are almost like little cities, so throughout history they've come a long way. Back in the 1920's it was rare for people to fly in planes because at first they were mainly used for mail services, but today there's over 100,000 passenger flights that go out per day worldwide!

However, it was really war in 1914 that made them advance and get used more. Even today, war means that we need to make sure we have the best planes and other vehicles to give us an advantage. At the start of the war, we used British or French planes, but we eventually built more advanced ones for ourselves through the Air Commerce Act of 1926 that payed federal funds to airports and bettering airplanes. So, throughout time airplanes have been huge in our success with military. Planes can be used to transport good, materials, and soldiers in war.
