The Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals for acute care hospitals includes implementing evidence-based practices to prevent health care–associated infections (HAIs) due to multi-drug resistant organisms. HAIs are a costly patient safety issue associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The Xenex pulsed xenon ultraviolet (PX-UV) light device has been shown to decrease pathogens on contaminated surfaces in hospital rooms, including multi-drug resistant organisms (MDRO) (Hosein et al., 2016). This device is linked to health care informatics because it uses innovative automated disinfection technology to support infection control and improve safety in patient care environments.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every year, millions of patients acquire infections while receiving care, treatment, and services in health care organizations (The Joint Commission, 2016). Infection prevention and treatment is a challenge in the current health care system, and the increase of MDRO further complicates this task. My hospital is a bone marrow transplant (BMT) center. Last year, many of our immunocompromised BMT patients were developing HAI, including C. difficile, resulting in transfer to critical care units. Due to this compromise of patient safety, our facility invested in two Xenex devices, and has since reported that the HAI rate has substantially decreased in our patient population. My facility is a great example of an organization that embraces new technology to further their commitment to a safety culture. The cost of these devices pales in comparison to the cost of HAIs and the poor outcomes associated with them.
