"...and I am a Chinese Iranian American attending Mission College. I am excited to be transferring to Chapman University this upcoming fall for Creative Producing. In my free time, I like to play games, work on my portfolio, and develop skills/learn new things such as coding, animation/3D modeling, and languages. Currently, I only speak English but I love learning bits and pieces of different languages such as Mandarin, Korean, and Spanish from my friends. Maybe one day I’ll commit to fully studying a language. If I had to eat one thing for the rest of my life, it’d 100% be sushi."

The teacher who exhibits comforting authority has the following traits, according to this part of our conversation in the interview with Salma:

Salma: “...Be a mentor. Establish a relationship where they look up to you, instead of on the same level as you.”

Hilal: “How do you make it so that they look up to rather than feel like they are on the same level as you?”

Salma: “Generally people look up to others based on experience and knowledge. Usually when someone has more knowledge and experience, you look up to them. Also, you can exemplify traits that other people do not have. Traits other people like. People should be able to come to you for advice. If they need help, they come to you for advice and because of that, they do not see themselves at the same level as you because they need guidance from you.”

[Later in the conversation]

Salma: “...[teachers should be] morally right, I would say! Like a lot of kids are complacent when they see other kids not acting right and stuff like that, but for instance, when teachers call out the bad behavior of others and kind of be firm on their opinions...I mean morally firm, I would say…”

Hilal: “Ohhh so you are saying authority figures should hold people accountable and that is comforting to you!”

[Further into the conversation]

Salma: “I think it is really important to establish that [being both friendly and authoritative] from the very beginning. At the beginning of the school year when they do not know you, right? It’s not like you can be very strict at the beginning and then halfway through the year, you are friendly. The kids will have by then put up a guard around you.”

Hilal: “Oh! So that goes back to consistency: from the very beginning be both friendly and authoritative. But in this case, authority comes with a positive connotation of being someone who is morally upright and holds people accountable, right?”

Salma: “Yes, I think you should also make holding people accountable known from the very beginning.”
