It actually gets discussed quite a lot in his Symposium, and also Phaedrus. The idea was that everything in nature had a 'form', or goal it was aspiring to. This form was one we all had once before, and still exists 'above the Heavens'. We love beautiful things because they remind us of that world above, and so bring us closer to it.
