Cyberbullying In light of the heated tone of the conversation at the school board meeting, i think we all could benefit from an overview of cyberbullying laws and legislation. The tip sheet linked below provides an overview for parents that is largely jargon-free. https://www.ncpc.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/NCPC_Cyberbullying-StayingInformed-LawsAndLegislation.pdf(Kelly B.)

BCPS Tools & Privacy Parents may sometimes feel overwhelmed at the amount of online resources their children are directed to utilize. Making the graphic and explanation linked below available to parents and being familiar with it oneself can help facilitate good conversations about student privacy when doing schoolwork. https://www.bcps.org/growing_up_digital/tools_privacy/(Kelly B.)

Student Data While this resource doesn’t directly connect to parent involvement, by ensuring that teachers know hot to protect student data, parents may feel additional support and be more inclined to be involved in school programs. The video linked below provides excellent details to support data safety. https://youtu.be/Qfae6zy_EiA(Kelly B.)

Healthy Balance I really like the posters for classroom use -- they could be handy to print as flyers for back to school night and other parent-friendly events. The resource that seems most relevant for parents is the “make room for healthy media choices” poster, linked below. https://www.bcps.org/growing_up_digital/healthy_balance/images/make-room.png(Kelly B.)

Digital Citizenship Sharing the tips from the “Digital Citizenship” homepage is a great resource for parents, as is the 2-page .pdf titled “Common Sense on Digital Life” for Middle and High School students. THis resource would be a great handout to have available to parents, especially on back-to school night, as my coursework frequently requires students to engage online via research and discussion. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/sites/default/files/uploads/pdfs/6-8-familytip-digital_life_052915.pdf (Kelly B.)

I realized all the websites that I am using in the classroom are a Level 1 tool “ essential to the curriculum and are under contract with BCPS” such as iReady, BrainPop, and Dreambox. This is a good resource that can be shared at back to school night with families because student information is not shred.

This article provides many "go-tos" to get their kids talking. Or if not talking to them (the parents)..thinking about who else they could use as a sounding board (school counselor, etc.)

Some of their ideas:
What’s going on at school? Is anything upsetting happening online? I’m here for you and so are your friends. Talk to me anytime. Are there any teachers at school who have dealt with these kinds of situations before? I think you should tell one of them about what’s been happening. Bullies want attention, power, and status, which explains why they need to cause drama. I saw a news story about a teen who was bullied online.

Cyberbullying
Bullying is easier now through technology and is becoming more prevalent with younger children. It can be often undetected by parents and teachers so it is important to talk to the child about what they are doing on their devices. Parents can become more aware by making a list together of how talking online is different than talking face to face. I think it is so important for the parents to model this action by example. They can practice writing a text together or be in a chat session. This will help the child to know right from wrong behaviors. I also liked that it mentioned that there should be consequences for bullying behavior. This shows the child that the parents are serious. Finally, I appreciate how the article suggested that when modeling to is important to compliment people and say nice things.

Healthy Balance
I really liked this section because it hit the nail on the head. It offered 5 simple tips on how to have a healthy balance. The first was to choose the good stuff. Simply said it means to pick the good websites, games, and digital interactions. Don't go looking for trouble. The second was watch, listen, and play together. Doing all three for about the same amount of time a day is very important. Talk to people face to face, interact, and enjoy their company. Then you can use technology. The third and I think the most important is walk the walk. ALL DEVICES AWAY DURING FAMILY MEAL TIME. It is so hard, but you need to lead by example. The fourth is to watch the clock. Allot a certain amount of screen time i a day. And finally, incorporate tech time with other activities.

Lisa Caplan
Digital relationships are permanent and that is very difficult for young kiddos to understand. Digital relationships can develop and use critical thinking skills in a digital environment. It is important for the parent to think long-tern. One bad choose will be on your child's record permanently. The parent needs to talk to the child (this seems to be a reoccurring theme in each area as it should be) to remind the child that it is important to keep personal information private at all times. The parent is ultimately the gate keeper and will monitor what the child is doing and for how long. Developing and implementing a contract that both parties abide by is a great tool. It is important for all to remember the Golden Rule. :

Now, I could totally see a whole lot of eye-rolling from middle/high school students.......but still, as I've said in several posts, this all has to be explicit, not just conceptual talking points. The customizable contract might get a little more buy-in from M/HS students if they are helping to create it. The check-in feature is critical. I think it's best from an early age (before there are any issues/drama), children/students know that we will be checking in, for their safety. This too, can be sent as an easy link for parents. While many of the tips may seem "simple," when faced with a cyberbullying issue involving one of their children, this could be extremely helpful. Further, I like that the video stresses to "keep the evidence" as tip number 3; many parents may not think to do this immediately but it could be so helpful in protecting their child. Also, I think it is important that they stress the difference between tattling and standing up for yourself, a great message for parents to share with their children.

It poses two great questions at the end asking what kind of footprint are you leaving and what kind do you want to leave. This also ties into conversations about cyberbullying and online security and I think it is such a good resource to begin these often difficult conversations (as children are sometimes very nonchalant about their social media accounts!) - great video for younger kids!
