Trilling and Fadel argue that our society has changed and how education should change in chapters one and two of 21st Century Skills: Learning for Life in Our Times. Forces such as traditional educational practices and policies resist 21st Century changes. Write a few sentences on how the "four converging forces" are changing education. Cite evidence from the text.

The four converging forces are knowledge work, thinking tools, digital lifestyles, and learning research. These four forces are changing education by forcing schools to reevaluate what it means to teach students for the future. It is forcing education to promote convergent thinking that helps students "create and innovate new products and services that solve real problems and meet the needs of real customers" (24). To further explain, traditional educational practices teach students like they are an assembly line. New education needs to teach them how to be creative and function in a constantly evolving society. It is also changing education by promoting hands-on learning, student directed teaching and project-based learning.

In the book, the authors stated, “nuts and bolts and manufacturing economy to one based on data, information and knowledge”. I really liked this because it shows how much technology has advanced over the years. These advancements have allowed our students to grow up and learn about things, such as coding, which wasn’t even available in the 70’s. I find these forces to be absolutely incredible and I’m excited about teaching in a world with such advanced technology.

The “four converging forces” are changing education by implementing a powerful force that teachers need to identify when creating experiences or lesson plans for students. In the text, “Educational accountability and standardized testing systems that primarily measure performance on basic skills such as reading and math” (35). This is an interesting quote because standardized testing relates to the idea of being a cookie-cutter teacher that matches only the standards and then moves on without really providing quality experiences that students can take with them after leaving your classroom. This is one resisting change that can be adjusted by having teachers focus on the life experiences and not solely the standards that match what they are doing. Each of the four converging forces represent a different component of the changes in education today compared to the past that teachers need to adapt to and be flexible with.
