Many people were against it because it made them look like the "beastly mannered"(pg 37) natives. Some even referred to it as a poisonous weed. Sugar played a major role in the colonial economy. The south became more farm oriented due to the large demand for sugar and tobacco.

He feared slavery because of the risk of internal revolts against them.  "As more settlers arrived, Oglethorpe returned to England to secure additional funds and have the trustees formally ban rum and slavery"(Article Link). This angered many farmers that relied on slaves to produce tobacco or sugar.
