         <description><![CDATA[<p>Seagrass meadows are underwater ecosystems that consist of dense seagrass beds. They are found in shallow waters along the coasts worldwide, except Antarctica. These beautiful meadows are home to an extensive variety of different species. Due to the dense coverage the seagrass beds provide, these meadows act as a refuge for small and young fish species. These seagrasses also provide perfect conditions for invertebrate life, causing the meadows to be covered with clams, scallops, snails, and many other species that provide an excellent food source for larger predators (Reynolds, 2025). </p>]]></description>

         <title>Seagrasses and Predation</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Seagrasses are one of the main primary producers in seagrass meadows. Seagrasses are relatives of terrestrial plants and have a rhizome, roots, leaves, and flowers. They are often confused with seaweed but are a flowering plant and not an alga. These primary producers provide food, shelter, and also prevent erosion and trap carbon within the sediment. An acre of Seagrass traps about 740 pounds of carbon each year and is responsible for trapping 18% of ocean carbon, but only takes up 0.1% of the ocean floor (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, n.d.).</p><p><br/></p><p>A common interaction in this ecosystem is predation, including predation on seagrasses. The green turtle (<em>Chelonia mydas) </em>spends most of its time foraging in the seagrass meadows, feeding mostly on seagrasses. This interaction benefits the ecosystem by removing old seagrass growth, which cuts the biomass of seagrass and increases its nutritional value (Plunk, 2024).</p>]]></description>

         <title>Dredging and Coastal Development</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Through the process of dredging and coastal development, we are losing parts of our seagrass meadows. The process of dredging includes taking unwanted materials out of the open, usually with a large scoop that takes out large chunks of sediment. This damages the ocean floor and the seagrasses. Coastal development also has dangerous consequences for the seagrass meadows (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, n.d.). When we build structures along the coast, pushing sediments into the ocean is common. This buries the seagrasses and prevents them from receiving sunlight and ultimately dying. </p><p><br/></p><p>Without seagrass meadows, we can expect to see increased erosion rates and large releases of trapped carbon, which can influence ocean acidification and create long-term effects on water quality and animal health.</p>]]></description>
