Our kindergarten team is focusing and sharing ideas this month for Round Robin. My class transitioned from Rally Robin to Round Robin pretty smoothly. One student has a hard time not being first and having to take turns. His group gets frustrated with him. I have started using his group as my model group and that seems to help him see that his voice will be heard.

Rally Robin
We have been practicing Rally Robin each day. This group of students is VERY talkative. However, listening is not always a strength. We often talk about and practice active listening; I also model active listening with a student partner. They are definitely coming along. They will need to be good listening partners when we get to structures like Timed Pair Share.

Stand Up-Hand Up- Pair Up
When we started using Stand Up-Hand Up-Pair Up, the students were only pairing with the "friend" or "partner" that they were comfortable working with. So, I planned several Class Building lessons that just created fun, light-hearted communication with multiple partners. I am, also, having the students use self-talk to count to 3 as they mingle, before they "pair up". This ensured that each student is finding a partner that is not on their team.
The student that did the "fly by" during Mr. Espey's observation was a consistent fly by when we started using the self-talk mingling. But, I did notice this week he was finding his own partner more often than not:)

Quiz, Quiz, Trade
This is one of my favorite structures for getting up and moving. I have used it for number id, letter id, letter sounds, one-to-one counting, and day/night. I plan only one coach question for each set of cards. It is difficult for kindergartners to coach without a planned question.

Take Off/Touch Down

I use Take Off/Touch Down a great deal in my classroom. This is a structure that can be thrown in on the spot to check for understanding, to redirect focus, and/or to provide a quick brain break. I like to use it during class meetings to provide a break from just sitting and listening. During my observation, we had just read a sight word book that was focused on traveling by different means (i.e. by bus, boat, airplane, etc.). The students stood and sat to represent what travel they had done. I liked Justin's reminder to discuss a response or two. During the class meeting scenario, this allows students to make connections with one another base on their experiences and likes/dislikes

Rally Coach
We use Rally Coach typically in Math and Pathways. This structure has been a little more difficult for us to master (not sure we have mastered it yet, but we are working on it). Some of my pairs work well together. However, some students have a hard time asking their partner if they agree. Those Ss just want to mark the answer before the consensus has been made and others want to look ahead to determine the answer to their own problem. Christina made suggestion for both issues. I have started folding the paper in half, so the pair can concentrate on one problem at a time. I am still working with a few Ss on being a good partner and asking for agreement.

Round Robin
We have been using Round Robin for a long time....months. I almost felt guilty picking this as my observation structure. However, it is a great structure to get kinders talking with one another, academically and team building. For this observation, we had been working on numbers to 100. My questions were tell a number with a 2 (8, 0, etc) in it. Then to bump up the difficulty I asked, say a number with 2 tens. I did observe a couple of students repeating another Ss answer. I always give that as an option when using Rally Robin and Round Robin.

Mix Pair Share
To Launch our Opinion Writing unit, Mrs. Lakatos' class came to play Would You Rather..... My class had only used Mix Pair Share a few times, but it is similar to Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up and uses a Rally Robin or Timed Pair Share. I think the structure was successful with a few typical problems. Fly by's and a need for a Partner Pond were normal at the beginning of this type of structure in my room. I think if our classes worked together more, they would become more comfortable with one another and not be so apprehensive finding a partner. The one problem with this structure is the timed portion. I am terrible at setting a timer for short answer questions. I set it when the Ss share at the end of WWS and RWS, but not really for short answer scenarios......my bad.
