   The cotton gin was a machine that allowed for faster, cheaper, and more efficient work. However it did not decrease the demand of labor, instead cotton production grew 800 percent during the start of the 1800's- leading to a larger demand for slaves. 
-Time of year? 
 Cotton planting took place in March and April. Cotton harvesting in the south starts in July and is ready to harvest when the bolls crack open and the fluffy white cotton is exposed. 
-How was cotton 'cleaned'?
   Cotton is cleaned by laying out the cotton in a cool dark area and allowing it time to dry. Once dried seeds were picked out by hand and was very time consuming. Workers consisted of the lower class, immigrants (mostly from Ireland and Germany), and young single women (which were the targets of the Lowell system). The Lowell system provided education and housing for the young single women as they worked until they got married. Canals helped overland shipping, especially the Erie Canal, it became the most popular U.S. port. Canals also opened up travel between the Midwest to the East, the Midwest farm products were made more accessible. And made transportation to the west easier.

Ships to Europe included steam boats and clippers. Steam boats were used for speed. Clippers were used to carry bulk cargo.

Cotton moved to city's and ports on steamboats that made their way through rivers and canals. A large export city was New Orleans, with lots of goods going to Liverpool, England.
Popular waterway's were Erie and the Mississippi.
