In my opinion, this non profit organization is not fully funded by the local government, so this organization relies on donations, public charities and private foundations. These helpful people totally depend on those funds to run the organizations, and also helps those people who love hiking and mountain climbing. There are many volunteers who participate in these missions. They are experts in hiking techniques and mountain climbing skills because they understand the knowledge of their geographic region very well. This organization helps the government authorities by doing their search and rescue efforts and they also afford expenses to buy essential equipment and training programs as well, the government doesn't have to think about investing the money in this type of mission. As a result, the government authorities can save their funds or income tax money for other projects. The government might not able to take responsibility for missing people, injuries or anything accidental; however, they do their duties according to their preferences or priorities.

The government doesn't have this kind of search and rescue team because it is a huge and very expensive project. If the government were to runs this organization, then they would have to hire experts and provide salaries, health care and life insurance to them. Similarly, the government would have to buy expensive gear and invest in the search and rescue training programs. This mission is full of responsibilities.

For example, if someone might be injured, the government would be responsible for all expenditures or someone were to go missing or die unfortunately, so their family members might be able to claim compensation. As a result, the government might have to pay them. This mission needs lots of money to run because the government thinks this mission should be run by a non profit organization, and that's why they encourage local non profit authorities. In fact the government already maintain emergencies rescue services such as, fire department, forest rangers and police etc; however, there are not enough rescue workers to cover all the places in the country. For instance, there are many people who get stuck in the forest while hiking or climbing, so many rescue workers would be needed for help to them. It might be difficult for the government to send rescue workers to many places. State government encourage non profit organization such as Crag Rats who love and passionate about their work. Their effort of volunteering saves many people's life, and this is the spirit for Crag Rats to continue thier work since old times.

Crag Rats know well about the areas of Mt. Hood and the Columbia Gorge, and also they are consist of experts who certified for technical rock and avalanche rescues. Therefore, they can rescue people who are in danger in these areas by helping the state government. Accidents that happen to climbers or hikers in nature shouldn't be delayed to get rescue more than anything, so a team that is consist of experts can be definitely a big help. A question was coming up in my mind as soon as I read this article. Why do not the government authorities hire a searching and rescue special team under their organization? Now that I think about it a little bit more, the government needs to budget these teams to run continuously, but it will be difficult for the government to run them directly because they are less efficient in the budget to carry out rescue operations that don't happen often in specific areas. In addition, the budget is not just for labor costs for the rescue team but a budget for their training and a lot of things that need for running a team. The budget might not be a small amount, so the government should cut some budget for other categories for it. Of course, the Government may support the Crag Rats by drawing up a small budget, but the Crag Rats might not receive such funds from the government because it doesn't fit their operational purpose. Running a non-profit organization that rescues people for almost a hundred years means they have their own mission and pride, and it deserves to be respected, I think.

Yes, I would use the volunteer pilot from AFW when I need them. Because transportation in the air reduces time, I would like to get on the helicopter. Since it's free, I'm a little worried about the volunteer pilot's recruitment criteria. I can not avoid big injury if something happens when we flying. But I don't know about driving a plane, it might be not super-complicated as I imagine.
statistically, fatal accidents are far less than traffic accidents. So, it could be called as cheapest, fastest, and safest way to transport.
